Big Moves for CBC Montreal
The CBC is planning some big changes at its Montreal HQ. The building is surrounded by a four hectare lot. According to the Gazette, the CBC plans to build 2,000 new housing units on the site and move its operations to a new building.
The project is projected to cost about $1.6 billion, all of which is planned to come from private developers – no taxpayer dollars on this project. The plan also entails opening up a few streets that the current lot blocks off.
Montreal employees, what do you guys think about the plans?

From my pov, I think it’s a great plan…if they can settle the claim Natives have on that land…until that happens, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Sounds like an interesting proposal. But the story is very vague about where Radio-Canada will house it’s new headquarters… Will it be smaller? Why move at all? It appears that the building will stay there. Those are a few of the questions I am asking. I hope SRC will at leat be making some money off of this, otherwise I am not quite sure I see the point.
Am I just being pessimistic/afraid of change?
Umm…The CBC itself is building housing units?
Are they for CBC employees or something?
It sounds like the CBC will trade land for a new building on the Montreal location.
The developers get to build housing units in exhange for the CBC giving them the land.
The developers will need to build a new build for the CBC. CBC will use this as an excuse for massive job cuts.
There goes the discounted parking for the employees in Montreal.
As an ex CBCer in the know, I honestly do not see any trade…phht what trade? Natives have a claim on that parking lot. Nothing is going to happen until that issue is settled. Although I can tell you that when SRC started drafting “the plan” they had no clue about the claim. Once they found out, from Legal, they quickly blamed the City of Montreal for selling them a land NOT owned by the City. So my prediction…no go, still in litigation.
