The CBC has proposed to use an independent third-party mediator to resolve the dispute between the Corp and the rights-holder of the Hockey Night in Canada theme.
No word yet from the “other side.”
A CBC spokesperson, though, doesn’t sound particularly hopeful, telling InsideTheCBC.com that “We’ve tried mediation before (unsuccessfully, as it turns out). We’ve also proposed arbitration, with no luck.”
Cross your fingers.

THE HEADS OF THE CBC SHOULD BE FIRED IF
THEY DON’T KEEP THIS SONG .THEY CAN WASTE
MONEY ON A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE NOT
NEED .BUT WHEN IT IS SOMETHING LIKE THIS .
THEY DON’T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY. WE
MUST KEEP THIS SONG AT ALL COST . IF WE
DON’T ALL MANAGEMENT MUST BE FIRED .
Oh the drama!
It’s never done until you see the actual show with different music.
CBC wants it.
They want it.
TSN doesn’t want it.
It’s all about $$.
Is there a math disconnect somewhere?
$500 a play they say. Total is $65,000 they say. Where exactly are the 130 plays? Every Saturday for maybe 30 weeks? The playoffs are long, but a hundred nights?
Um, according to news reports, you’re a little late. CTV / TSN just bought it. Way to go guys. The CBC loses the most iconic theme in Canadian history and why? According to Dolores Claman’s lawsuit, by ripping off the Canadian composer and then, it would seem, trying to play hardball with her.
Woohoo. Defenders of Canadian culture. Did the Harper government put you up to this so they could justify eliminating your funding?
Hey, I thought it was a nifty song too. But Jesus Delores, once again, it’s amazing the things that it takes to get Canadians up in arms.
I think as a country we’ve all taken a few too many pucks to the head.
[...] What happened is the CBC decided to break off negotiations and announced a contest to replace the jingle with a new one, sort of a American Idol for jingles. At this point CTV, another major TV station swooped in and bought the rights, for roughly $2.5 million or so. I personally believe that the Contest and the ending of negotiations was a bit of a ploy on the CBC’s negotiators side, because as soon as they saw that CTV was in the running the announced they were negotiating again.
