November 4, 2010 – CBC Radio fans can now listen to CBC Radio One, Radio 2 and Radio 3 on iPad thanks to the latest update to the highly popular CBC Radio app. The new universal app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch is available now on the Apple App Store.

“It’s truly exciting to be able to offer the full slate of CBC Radio’s diverse program excellence in such accessible and innovative ways via the iPad. It feels like a whole new rich content experience,” said Denise Donlon, general manager, CBC Radio.

Listeners can listen live to any CBC Radio station across Canada or program favourite CBC Radio shows on-demand such as The Current with Anna Maria Tremonti, Q with Jian Ghomeshi, The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers, the new Day 6 with Brent Bambury, Writers & Company with Eleanor Wachtel, As it Happens with Carol Off and much more.

Enjoy live streams of CBC Radio 2 including Radio 2 Morning hosted by Bob Mackowycz, Tempo hosted by mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah and Drive with Rich Terfry. Plug into CBC Radio 2’s live streams of Canadian composers, Canadian songwriters, classical and jazz channels or catch CBC Radio 3 with all genres of new music including indie rock, hip hop and electronica.

The updated CBC Radio app brings iPad users the full range of CBC Radio content already available to those with iPhone or iPod touch. Users can also access the CBC Program Guide to find out what’s playing now or to plan their CBC Radio listening schedule.

As well, the updated app also offers audio sessions from CBC-TV favourites, letting listeners enjoy audio-only versions of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, Mansbridge One on One and the CBC News At Issue panel.

CBC Radio content accessible through the CBC Radio app includes:

• CBC Radio One: A wide range of local, national and international news, current affairs, documentaries, arts and culture including 63 on-demand programs and 22 live streams.

• CBC Radio 2: The best Canadian music, commercial-free: classical, jazz, singer-songwriters, pop, R&B, world, soul and much more. Four on-demand programs and nine live streams.

• CBC Radio 3: A ‘Best Online Radio’ nominee at the Webby awards two years in a row, CBC Radio 3 is THE place to discover the best new Canadian indie acts. Five on-demand programs and one live stream, plus access to more than 100,000 tracks from more than 20,000 artists via the now embedded in-app CBC Radio 3 website.

The app also lets users run CBC Radio content as multi-tasking background audio while tending to other tasks on iPhone or iPod touch. For iPhone, the app also remembers episode playback positions if listening is interrupted by an incoming phone call.

Jonathan Carrigan, the product manager of the application, said the application “may increase the amount of time people listen,” adding that the it makes it more convenient to listen to the CBC, so people may listen longer or listen on the go. More importantly the application also allows the CBC to “reach a new audience that we may have not have otherwise reached,” Carrigan said.

The application allows users to listen to CBC Radio One, Radio 2 and Radio 3 live streams, or a bunch of on-demand content while  simultaneously browsing the cbc.ca website. You can get the application here ( the link will open iTunes).

The CBC introduced its first iPhone application today. The application streams content from Radio One, Radio 2, and CBC Radio 3, and audio from CBC Television.

The free application works on the iPhone or iPod Touch. It will allow users to listen to as many as 19 live streams and a host of on-demand content. “One of the best features is the integration of the iPhone optimized web site within the application, so that you browse cbc.ca while you’re listening to the CBC,” Jonathan Carrigan, who lead the product development, said this afternoon.

Carrigan said the development was extremely smooth, partly because everyone on the project was passionate about it but also because everyone realized the public demand. He said the CBC’s audience relations department has been getting a steady flow of requests for an iPhone app for several months, so he was very pleased to be able to introduce it today, “this truly is in response to popular demand,” he said from Vancouver.

Carrigan said the application focuses on audio content because “the numbers point to audio being a big opportunity.” He also hinted the CBC is currently working on other iPhone applications for the fall, but couldn’t be more specific.

The digital programming department unveiled a new iPhone site yesterday.

The site improves the navigation, includes more visuals, and has the ability to share stories via Facebook, Twitter and email.

If you’re having trouble with CBC content on your iPhone, the CBC also redesigned the support page.

Both the iPhone and the iPod has become extremely popular platforms for the CBC. Richard Stursberg said a few weeks ago that the CBC served 787,000 podcasts in May, and the iPhone site clocked 920,000 page views.

If you can tear yourself away from Super Monkey Ball for just a moment, you may be interested to learn that CBCnews.ca has just launched a special web site for iPhone users. Just point the Safari browser on your phone to cbc.ca/iphone and you can get the lastest news from CBC.

iPhone users have always been able to see the CBCnews web site, but it’s just been a minature display of the regular site desktop users see.

If, on the other hand, you’re a rational person and didn’t spend nearly $3,000 over a mandatory locked-in three year plan, you can see access CBCnews.ca on your cell phone by pointing your phone’s browser to m.cbc.ca.

The site even checks with you to confirm that streaming video ain’t cheap in Canada (hmph) so be sure you want to stream.

So far, it’s confirmed to work on Rogers, Fido, not so much on Bell…
