CBC TV cameraman will not face obstruction charges, but police still hold tape

Don Scott, a CBC TV cameraman, will not face obstruction charges for an incident with Winnipeg police last month.

Scott was arrested December 12 where he was filming a police standoff. His camera and tape were seized. A CBC executive says police are still holding the videotape.

Police said Scott was within a safety perimeter and refused to move away when an office asked him to. The CBC said Scott agreed to move, but was arrested because he refused to stop videotaping.

Cameraman Don Scott had not been formally charged but was scheduled to appear in court for “obstructing a peace officer.”

The Crown prosecutor said “We just felt it didn’t meet the requirements of the section for obstruction.”

Watching Between the Lines

Ever wondered what the news anchor does in between the commercial breaks? Now, you don’t have to wonder. Turns out, because the CBC News at Six is broadcast live (and without commercials) on the Internet stream in most regions, some on-air staff use it to say hi to people who might be watching the stream.

Behind the Scenes at CBC Winnipeg

This is a video from 1998, in which then-Winnipeg anchor Diana Swain introduces viewers to the CBC’s new home in the city. Even though it’s no longer “new,” the video provides a great tour behind the scenes of the construction of the newsroom and studio.

A sampling of Living

Now that the “Living” series (the regional daytime TV shows) have started to get their footing, I thought I’d do some quick captures of what the various shows are covering. This is taken from a couple of days last week.

Although what I don’t understand: In some cities, the show is called “Living [City]” and in others, it’s called “Living In [City]”. I know it’s not a big deal, but I hate inconsistencies. :(

CBC News at Six: Did someone forget to send Vancouver the memo?

Today was the first day of the new CBC News at Six hour-long regional newscasts.

But oddly, the B.C. edition kept calling itself Canada Now (the name of the national/regional hybrid show formerly in that time slot). Did Vancouver miss the cancellation memo? Likely not, as Canada Now’s national show originated from Vancouver. Plus, a bumper voiceover said “You’re watching Canada Now. Where B.C. news comes first.”

B.C. bureau chief Liz Hughes explained to me that B.C. decided to stay with Canada Now in Vancouver because, “for the audience, nothing much changed in Vancouver. The show always had an hour of local, national and international news hosted by Ian [Hanomansing] and Gloria [Macarenko].”

As many of you know, CBC is planning some big changes for television news, so the name change will likely roll-out when all of that is ready.

Anywhere, here’s a taste of what day one looked like in Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. (Personally, I think the Calgary graphics kick sweet arse.)

CBC Winnipeg staff turn on the Grey Cup spirit

While CBC Thunder Bay dries out, the folks at CBC Winnipeg are enjoying a rather warm spell — perhaps partially due to the heat they’re generating for their long-suffering CFL Bombers. “While our beloved Bombers got their clocks cleaned by Toronto (the shame! the horror!) our plant has gone Cup crazy,” Winnipeg staffer Louise Waldman writes.
This morning, they launched a blitz of Cup-related programming, which you can read about “below the fold.”
