Coronation Street

Corrie cancellation hoax

Coronation StreetYesterday, and Inside the CBC visitor submitted this comment to one of our stories:

Date: January 18, 2007
Did you know that the CBC is cancelling all future showings of Coronation St. from 1st. June 2007 and is not buying any more episodes?
All fans should write to protest ASAP.
The reduced schedule starts on March 31, 2007 when it will be shown twice a week.
They are trying to encourage us to watch their new soap based on Coronation St. called Totem St. and enjoy its Canadian setting!

Fear not! This is NOT TRUE.

I asked CBC Media Relations, and was told, “That letter is a hoax. It’s been floating around the blogs for the past few days.”

(The fact that the neither the communications officer nor the phone number exist did tip me off.)

If you fell for it (or submitted it here…) don’t worry. You are not alone.

Changes to Coronation Street schedule

Ordinarily, I don’t cover regular programming notes — I usually just leave them for the Cheap Plugs category. But Coronation Street is different. Everyone at the Ceeb learns all too well that the two things you don’t mess with on CBC Television is hockey and Coronation Street.
Well, we’re messing with it. But do not freak out — fan(atic)s will get their full complement of episodes.
On Monday, Jan. 22, we’ll telecast back-to-back episodes at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The series will be pre-empted on Tuesday, Jan. 23 for the NHL All-Star Skills Competition and on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for the NHL All-Star Game.
”Corrie” will be seen at its regularly scheduled time on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., and on Friday, Jan. 26, when back-to-back episodes air at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
And remember, don’t shoot the messenger. :-)

New CBC soap opera will be more “Coronation Street” than “All My Children”

North/South

More information is emerging about the upcoming CBC soap opera North/South. As the Canadian Press noted this morning: It “may be a daytime soap opera, but don’t expect anyone to come back from the dead.”
The show revolves around four very different families within the construction industry in Halifax. Floyd Kane, who created and produced the show for CBC, says the show will be more like Coronation Street than All My Children. “I don’t want to do anything that’s outlandish,” he said. “Everything that’s in North/South will be somehow based on the probable and the possible.”
For instance, he said that while American outdoor sets are often shot indoors (and look it), the CBC show will shoot outdoors and will have regular-life storylines.
