CBC and CMG Reach Tentative Agreement

The CBC and the Canadian Media Guild have reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year deal after seven weeks of negotiations. The deal was signed this afternoon. It is subject to a ratification vote by guild members.

If ratified, the deal would come into effect on January 1st, 2009 and last until 2014.

The details are a bit thin at this point, but here are the highlights:

  • Wage increases of 1.5 per cent each year;
  • Improvements in maternity/paternity benefits;
  • Improved benefits for bereavement leave and layoffs.

There are obviously way more details on the deal, and I’ll post them as I get them.

What do you think so far?

    This is very good news.
    1.5 % a year guaranteed is very good in this economic environment.

    For several hours on Sunday morning the feed for CBUT Channel 3 in Vancouver was displaying a static image that said something to the effect that it was time to dump big contracts. The CBUT-DT digital feed seemed untouched. I take it this was related to the CBC-CMG bargaining…

    Very good news. It seems that under Hubert, the tone of labour relations has really changed and that’s a good thing for us all. CBC has enough challenges without the employees and management fighting all the time.
