CBC and NHL close to a deal: Globe and Mail

The Globe and Mail is reporting that a new NHL rights deal involving the CBC and TSN is close to being done. “The agreement, which would start in 2008-09, would give TSN a stronger national package with more games involving Canadian teams and also a Canadian series in at least one round of the NHL playoffs,” said the newspaper.

It reported that Hockey Night in Canada would stay on the air, but that the CBC would lose some Canadian playoff content to TSN. CBC would “get most of the postseason, including the Stanley Cup final.”

Go CBC! I sure hope the CBC is able to renew the NHL contract. Life without Hockey Night in Canada isn’t something I want to think about.

Lose Bob Cole and Harry Neale, quickly! Dean Brown, the voice of the Ottawa Senators, would be an excellent replacement for Cole.

    Jason Paris says:

Glad to hear it looks like HNIC will continue. I’m far from a sports fan, but I’ve always believed hockey is central to the CBC and central to keeping CBC financially viable.

    CBC Fan says:

I understand the frustrations some fans have with Bob Cole but I don’t see Dean Brown as a replacement. He is too much tied with one team. It is such a shame that the CBC let Chris Cuthburt go.

    Peter Haley says:

And you don’t think Cole/Neal have ties with the Maple Leafs? I would chose Dean Brown because of his great voice and enthusiasm for the game. I don’t think he is biased in his broadcasting, or, if he is, he would have to lose it if he did nationally televised games. Anyway, my push isn’t for Brown so much as to get rid of the tired and tiring voices of Cole/Neale.
