CBC Ombudsman Gets All Social Media on Your Ask
The new CBC Ombudsman, Kirk Lapointe, has set up a blog, a Twitter account, and an RSS (really something something) feed as he ushers in a new era of social media transparency to his office.
Now don’t get me wrong, my inner nerd is happier than a kid on Christmas about all this social media stuff. It just seems a bit, uhm… contrived.
I hope his office has the staying power to really keep up with it.
Beyond that I really think Lapointe has made a effort to set up the channels in order to be open and transparent here; and that’s truly commendable.
As the first post on the site says:
The CBC belongs to the people of Canada. As the public broadcaster, the CBC plays a unique role in Canadian journalism. At the CBC information is a public service. The Ombudsman is here to ensure CBC upholds its standards and practices to provide you with information programming of the highest quality.
We recognize your right to accuracy, fairness and integrity in CBC’s journalism. And we recognize your right to hold CBC accountable for the quality of its information programming.
What do you think of the new ombudsman site?

Wow. More obvious product placement for apple. How contrived.
I don’t care about the site, but it is the first time I have heard anyone in senior positions at CBC talk about public service in a long, long time.
As for the Ombudsman, sounds like the righties who troll here will have some serious conspiracy theory work to do to make it look negative.
Definately a step in the right direction.
Definitely a red herring, or a shield.
At least it may indicate that CBC has finally got the message, but seriously, the people who should be held accountable are the politicians in Ottawa who continue to fund this waste.
The first step they could take is to answer all the access to information requests they get.
We demand it from MPs, senators and now even first nation`s leaders are coming around. You take money from the public, you must be transparent and accountable with it.
Why aren’t we bugging the politicians then, Louise?
Oh, right. They’re Reform.
Back to you.
The CBC should use Canada’s New Government as a model and keep re-announcing things that it already announced. The Feds announce something, shelve it, then re-announce it months later as if it was new… so maybe CBC should release FOI documents, and then re-release them a second time, claiming twice the credit.
damned partisan-minded Bill,
The Ombudsman is not responsible for access to information requests. I know because I am currently waiting for a response to an ATI request of my own.
Hey Percy; don’t deflect criticism of the CBC’s left-wing media slant by attacking the present Conservative government.
I find it funny that the left-wingers who support the CBC invariably mock the present centre-right government.
@The Truth
Why do you find it funny that left-wingers mock the centre-right government? Makes sense to me.
I think he finds it funny that CBC viewers, predominantly whom are politically left socialists, of course are obligated to oppose Stephen Harper. The CBC is actually very left-wing in its broadcasts, and rarely has anything nice to say about gun owners, traditionalists, Christians, and people who want low taxes.
And hey; the CBC ombudsman looks a lot like Julian Assange, doesnt he !!
Ombudsman and CBC refer to his web page as a blog.
It’s a page of infrequent musings, so I guess that qualifies it as a “blog”.
Nut how is that “social media”?
What’s social about it?
There is no option to provide feedback. It’s a one-way conversation.
That’s closer to being a propaganda platform than a dialogue.
Typical CBC. No respect for their audience.
Allan,
I think you will find that some blog posts can be commented on. Of course, the blog is rather new, so there are only two posts in total. However, there is clearly a comment section at the bottom of this page: http://www.cbc.ca/ombudsman/2010/12/securing.html
Maybe the Ombudsman can find Mansbridge`s chair.
(thanks ghurley)
Oh, I get it.
I just have to go to a different page than the one linked to in the above article.
And then when I get there – hey another link on the word “blog” that takes you back to the same page you’re on.
Right.
That’s not exactly a shining example of useability.
And knowing that the CBC employs very capable web monkeys, I suspect that the unhelpful layout is a deliberate attempt to thwart feedback from the public.
If you’re going to say you have a blog then make its location evident and inviting, not hidden.
“According to documents obtained by QMI Agency though access to information, CBC officials were not only willing to allow an Ontario Liberal MPP to use the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto for a concert and silent auction fundraiser, they were willing to waive their standard 20% commission on auction to help the fundraiser be a success.
CBC “top brass” later ordered the manager of the concert hall to cancel the event, pointing out that it would be inappropriate for the state broadcaster to be seen as supporting any one political party.”

I hope this guy can find and fire the faceless bureaucrats in the CBC who agreed to this event. Do they think the CBC is still just the media arm for the Liberals?

“The CBC is actually very left-wing in its broadcasts, and rarely has anything nice to say about gun owners, traditionalists, Christians, and people who want low taxes.”
So from one corner of the mouth, Leonard accuses the CBC of bias (without evidence), and from the other suggests it should be biased. Just towards his interests.
I would suggest you need to make up your mind, but that’s already done. You’re not looking for debate, you’re looking for a pulpit.
You deleted my comment reguarding Candice Hoeppner being voted as 2010 game changer.

Since it took almost 2 weeks, I thought you’s simply deleted my comments. My last comment is now redundant.
While I’m posting, I’ll leave this little tidbit:
