CBC Radio 3 has been nominated for a prestigious Webby Award, in the radio category. The nomination, which was unveiled earlier today by The Webby Film & Video Awards, puts CBC Radio 3 in the company of BBC Radio 1, iCat fm, NPR and Virgin Radio.
As one of five nominees from around the world in this category, Radio 3 and the team behind it are eligible for the Internet industry’s two most sought-after awards: The Webby Award and The Webby People’s Voice Award. This is the second year in a row that Radio 3 has been nominated.
CBC overall was also named an “official honoree” for CBC Podcasts—an honour granted to fewer than 15% of entrants and one that signifies an outstanding caliber of work.
Unlike other awards shows, where only judges choose the winners, The Webby Awards also give the global Web community an opportunity to decide who will take home a Webby. Starting today, and running through to May 1, the public can cast their votes in The Webby’s People Voice Awards. Award winners will be announced May 6, and honoured at a star-studded ceremony ceremony for the 12th Annual Webby Awards in New York City on June 9.
Hailed as the “Oscars of the Internet,” The Webby Film and Video Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. Established in 1996, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. This year, the Awards received a record 9,500 entries from across the U.S. and over 60 countries worldwide.

webbies may or may not be “prestigious” but they’re really not that hard to get nominated for.
congrats on the nom. Keep in mind that R3 already has 3 Webbies, in 2003 they won for broadband (that internet thing) and 2 peeps choice awards - one for Radio and one for broadband. and back in 2003 there were way fewer categories and it was crazy hard to get nominated.
gary 7 sounds a tad bitter. really, it’s ok to be thrilled to be nominated. while it’s true anyone can enter the webbies (you have to pay to apply), the competition for a nomination is super steep - there are usually a few thousand entries in any given category. it’s still a big deal to win one.

Congratulations to a great team, some great music (well almost all!) and a deserved recognition. Not only here at home, but also when I talk to potential partners, the guys at Apple, AMP’ed, Helios and so on who are based in the US, there is alway a huge recognition of Radio 3 as they’re loving it whether it’s over Sirius, the net or on the iPod.
They’ve become NA’s only nationally syndicated indie station!
I love it - only place I can hear Chad Vangaalen AND Mr Love and Justice himself, Billy Bragg.
I think the new radio streaming services announced for later this year can be equally great - I’d certainly like better jazz on-line!
R3 is terrific.
But as for the Webbies adding to its lustre, I’m not so sure. Slate debunks the Webbies and their supposed exclusivity.

The Webbies can hardly be compared to the Oscars.
