CBC SportsPlus to launch, despite privates’ opposition

The CRTC approved a new CBC sports specialty channel Wednesday, but will limit the amount of high-ratings sports like hockey, basketball and football.

CBC SportsPlus is expected to start early in 2009.

As part of the licence, at least 30% of the content must be covering amateur sport, calculated weekly. Also, no more than 30% of weekly broadcasts could involve pro sports and only 10 per cent could be high-profile sports such as hockey, baseball, football, basketball, golf, soccer or tennis.

Calculating weekly, rather than hourly, will make it difficult for new station to exceed its programming limits during high ratings — playoffs, for example — and then make it up in slack periods.

A number of groups, including CTVglobemedia, Rogers, and Score Media, had opposed the proposed channel saying it would unfairly compete against their sport channels.

And will this also include women’s sports?

    Jason Paris says:

I always wondered why the CBC never tried to purchase The Score. It would be an easier way to go about this methinks.

    Chris Porter says:

How about some coverage of Ultimate Frisbee?

    Cody says:

CTV stole the HNIC theme song so I hope CBC SportsPlus does very well! I would love to see a CBC based station that has all the sports any person could watch!

    Lizzie says:

they should make a movie on Eric Lamaze’s life

    Jim Murray says:

Jason Paris is right. The CBC should have bought the Score. Most certainly, it should have had a sports channel at the same time as TSN and SN, but with the private broadcasters having virtual control of the CRTC for years, it probably wasn’t in the cards. How CTVgm and CanWest and Rogers can claim so many channels, and so few allotted to a “public airways” is beyond my comprehension. I hope CBC SportsPlus gives the others hell.

    The Qaz says:

    Jason…they did try.

    Vancouver Guy says:

    Right Chris… show some Ultimate!

(CBC missed a golden opportunity this month, as it turns out, with the *world championships* taking place in Vancouver, and with cdn teams taking gold in 2 divisions (silver in two others!).

I would also fault CBC and all other “amateur” sports television networks for not showing enough CIAU sports, especially basketball!
