CBC TV to air search for Canada’s next political star

CBC personality Rick Mercer will host a televised search for aspiring politicians featuring a judging panel composed of former prime ministers Brian Mulroney, John Turner, Kim Campbell and Joe Clark. The Next Great Prime Minister, set to air in the spring, pits five young Canadians in a question period with Canada’s former leaders on how they would make Canada a better, stronger nation, with a winner chosen at the end of the show.
Canadians aged 18 to 25 wishing to enter must submit a three to five minute videotaped speech with their prime ministerial message. The judges will narrow the field to 20 applicants, who must then complete an interview process. [more]

Just a note, that Krista Harris would have been 42 yesterday, November 15

    Lest you all forget!

    May she rest in peace

CTV aired what sounds like exactly the same thing (It was sponsored by Magna which used it as their finals for their annual essay contest). It was produced by 90th Parallel productions and Ben Mulroney was hosting. Same pannel of ex-PMs. I hear Turner was drunk and rude to the contestants.

Does this mean Magna has jumped to CBC? Or are we just copying their idea?

    Joe Clark says:

And how is this different from City Idol, except that this is going to be a TV show whose winner *won’t* actually run for office?

Yet another derivative idea from the Corpse. And it is *yet* *another* reality show. I suppose that is better than one more half-hour of news satire lite.

    Scott M. says:

CTV’s version of this wasn’t half bad, and the idea is intrguing if only for the chance to see the PMs squabble. But one must ask oneself: “If I really want to become a politician, will this help or hinder my chances?”

    My guess is the latter.
