Investigative journos get award for lottery piece
A team of CBC journalists who conducted an investigation into the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. have been awarded the Consumers’ Association of Canada’s top prize. A team of reporters from The Fifth Estate questioned the suspicious number of retailers and clerks who have won lotteries.
The investigation revealed that in the past seven years Ontario clerks and retailers have claimed lottery victories nearly 200 times. University of Toronto statistician Jeffery Rosenthal said the number should have been closer to 57.

Congratulations to the people involved in that reportage!
Congrats to The Fifth Estate ‘s Gillian Findlay, Harvey Cashore and Linda Guerriero and the 81 years old Bob Edmonds. What a great story. And what a bunch of CYA experts working for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.
Great job.
So what you are saying is … They got the facts wrong yet get an award for the report… OK.
Once in a while, journalism affects a person and two right close to home. The Fifth Estate has done a marvellous job doing something that many programmes can’t do: By humanising their investigations.
From what I remember from late last year, their investigation into the OLC’s practices helped Bob Edmonds get his apology back. And I smiled when he smiled, thanks to the efforts of enlightening journalists.
Why can’t we get that more on the other networks?
After watching your program on OLC I have lost entirely confidence in OLC. There is no transparency of the ” drawings ” at all.
I would like to know how numbers are drawn by computer. It must be a program prepared by human and numbers ” drawn ” in a combination unlikely selected by lottery players as the computer has 2 hours time to record all played combinations and select the combination which has not been scratched out by players.
The following is my email sent to OLT:
I wonder why the draw of a numbers is not shown on Tv. Only numbers already ” drawn “somewhere” are shown on Tv.
In other countries tv viewers are able to see the entire draw of the numbers.
I wonder why your employee who won 6 million dollars was told after winning to stay home for a week as you conducted an investigation whether some inside information was awailable to that winner- / I refer to your explanation regrarding integrity of Lottery Corp.given to a newspapers/.
Your refusal to give me your explanation requested in my email mailed to you on 27 Feb 2006, confirms my opinion that there is NO TRANSPARENCY in the procedure of the draws.
Who are those 2 people who suppose to supervise the draws ? Who have appointed them, and what is the quarantee that they are entirely impartial?
Looking forward to receiving your response.

Ps: After watching the TV program last night makes me wonder why Ontario Lottery Corporation has not been put under TAX PAYERS close scrutiny and Public Ombudsman.
Do I need to wait for your response as Mr Edmont for another 4 years ?
