Corrie cancellation hoax
Yesterday, and Inside the CBC visitor submitted this comment to one of our stories:
Date: January 18, 2007
Did you know that the CBC is cancelling all future showings of Coronation St. from 1st. June 2007 and is not buying any more episodes?
All fans should write to protest ASAP.
The reduced schedule starts on March 31, 2007 when it will be shown twice a week.
They are trying to encourage us to watch their new soap based on Coronation St. called Totem St. and enjoy its Canadian setting!
This information from the desk of [edited], Communications Officer, CBC Audience Relations.
Contact them at CBC.ca or phone [edited]
Fear not! This is NOT TRUE.
I asked CBC Media Relations, and was told, “That letter is a hoax. It’s been floating around the blogs for the past few days.”
(The fact that the neither the communications officer nor the phone number exist did tip me off.)
If you fell for it (or submitted it here…) don’t worry. You are not alone.

Wow, do I hate Coronation St! If we are going to use the national broadcaster to show imported shows — at least make it good ones. How about some quality soccer matches from the UK instead.
Mike
It’s called Soccer Saturday – CTV Sportsnet
I thought we were getting good imports already: Doctor Who for starters.
Might just be due to the fact that I’m a science fiction fan, though.
Corrie’s a good show, just not for everyone. It takes a Canadian native a while to understand the culture it represents.
The writing and acting is quite good; it’s considered an honour to get a part on the show, and a good way for a British actor to get exposure.
It may only be shown on CBC for the older generation and British ex-pats, but I’ve been watching it since my mid-20s, and I’ve always lived here.
I wouldn’t say it’s just the elderly who are into the show. I’m in my mid-thirties and ended up a Corrie addict, thanks to my English-born wife, so much so that I ended up writing for a Corrie blog.
Good to hear it’s sticking around for a while yet.
Then there are those of us south of the border who rely on the CBC to get our Corrie fix – I’m actually choosing to get ripped off by Comcast rather than get a satellite dish because I can’t get CBC on satellite.
Corrie forever! And how about catching us up to the UK on the episodes – spoilers abound when they are 9 months ahead of us…
