CBC audience share continues growing: CRTC report
Earlier this week, the CRTC released the eighth edition of its annual Broadcasting Policy and Monitoring Report. Some highlights:
- The CBC’s audience share increased by 16% between 2004/05 and 2005/06
- In 2006, the overall proportion of viewing to Canadian programs on CBC Television increased from 65% to 80%
- CBC’s Canadian drama and comedy programs captured 39% of overall viewing in these genres in 2006–up 4% over 2005
- Advertising revenue is back on track, thanks largely to the return of NHL hockey following the 2005 lockout–ad revenue for CBC Television was up 68 % ($224 million in 2006 compared to $133 million in 2005).
The numbers for Newsworld aren’t as good. In 2005, its profit margin was 14.6%. This year it was -3.9%.

This is indeed good news. More than a few people were doing Something Right and Doing It Well to boot, for this result to be happening. Thumbs up!
if cbc tv brought back Emmerdale, audience share, i am sure, would be greater!!!
The profits for Newsworld may be down, but that could be an indication of higher operating costs and/or lower ad revenue for all cable specialty nets. I truly believe the quality of programming on Newsworld has increated over the last few years. Particularly the on-air look and design is stronger than it has ever been. Overall the network is better at covering news across the country.
Wow, that’s amazing news! I’m not surprised though, I’ve noticed a big change in quality in the last few years.. lots of the newer CBC shows are.. uh.. watchable now.
The documentaries CBC aired in the last few years have actually been pretty decent, its no longer documentaries about history of Canadian documentaries! http://www.cbc.ca/22minutes/22_single_player.html?archive/2006-2007/oct_3/documentaries
I have friends of certain obvious political affiliations who won’t watch the CBC just because they want the funding to be cut, but if I could choose between 4 hours of CSI or America’s got Talent/American Idol/American merde-o-rama talent show of the day or some made in Canada show that actually is interesting, I will choose CBC without a doubt, plus that show Dragon’s den is better than most shows on the rival networks now days.
If CBC was able to get the rights to Corner Gas, I would never have to watch CTV ever again!
No arguments on Newsworld’s end-product being as solid as it’s ever been. I fully expect the financial end of things there to be little more than a blip over the long haul.
As to CBC’s drama programming and stuff that ought to be brought back…well, I’ve made my case for This is Wonderland before. Da Vinci seems to be on its way back, so that franchise doesn’t need anyone championing it. (Not that I’d mind seeing champions organizing for a full revival anyway…)
And, let’s not forget the great job CBC Sports is doing!
Thankfully, the soccer coverage is getting better every game. And can’t wait until the NHL returns in proper over-the-air HD. If only OTA would come to my normal home cities in Alberta.
