CTV has launched a citizen journalism web site, taking video footage or images.
CTV boasted in a news release that the launch welcomes “a possible 10 million new video journalists” to the network. “Now, anyone with a digital camera or video phone can contribute to CTV News.”
CTV newsrooms across the country will monitor all of the content posted to MyNews.CTV.ca to determine its news value.
MyNews.CTV.ca will also have a daily list of the recent video and images that have been submitted.

Do their professional news reporters and photographers still have jobs?
How is this not “Your News” which CBC is pushing non-stop?
I’m only going to their website if CTV can promises the citizen journalism will be as insightful as the public comments on the Globe and Mail website.
Hi
I thought this article was unbalanced and factually incorrect. I include a copy of the letter I wrote to Playback telling them so. Make no mistakes - the CBC is an absolute leader in the creation of Canadian content for Canadians on all platforms.
Dear Playback
I’m writing in response to an article published, May 26 titled “Breeding a society of Zapruders” by Tamsen Tillson.
Hoping you might provide a CBC response as a Letter to the Editor.
I have to admit that the article didn’t seem very balanced - as we were never contacted to verify the facts the unfortunate result is that an otherwise interesting piece of journalism looks like a CTV PR department rewrite.
The fact is that CBC.ca continues to be the number one news/media website used by Canadians. CBC.ca’s average monthly unique visitors of 4.2 million and 67 million page views (2+ comScore all locations) for 2007 was up 8.9% compared to average monthly unique visitors for 2006. This is impressive growth considering 2006 had both an Olympics and an election.
In addition, the redesigned CBCSports.ca, with improved video live and on-demand streaming showed impressive growth from 750K average monthly unique visitors to 1.1M. In addition Sports has streamed the complete FIFA Under 20, all Hockey Night in Canada and Play Off games, Figure Skating Championships, Toronto FC, World Alpine, exclusively produced for on-line Pre and Post Game shows and so on and so on.
Finally a wholly new CBC Entertainment site was launched in September 2007 growing to 440K monthly unique visitors in its first six months with a total of 2M streams served through Media Player in the first quarter post launch (Oct – Dec ’07). In December, with eleven hit Canadian shows, we launched more programming in the Apple TV Canada launch than any other broadcaster.
Again before the CTV launch, the CBC in April, extensive audience engagement and user generated content tools were implemented throughout CBC.ca using “best in market” technology such as Pluck, Thin Data, Maven and Loomia. A new CBC Member center was launched in March with now over 50,000 registered members and around 20,000 comments on CBC.ca content per week. In addition, before CTV’s launch the CBC launched the Your Voice section on CBCNews.ca; including user uploaded videos and images, regular chats with newsmakers and CBC correspondents; regional Your View blogs; a CBC News Facebook page; reader comments and recommendations, and Most Emailed, Most Popular and Most Blogged features for News and Sports sites.
With the addition of the Maven media player CBC.ca has moved from streaming just five regular programs (The National, Local News from Regional Newsrooms and 3 TV Programs) to a 2008 total of 351 live events streamed, a total of 875 hours of programming as well as the Regional Newscasts and all the other regularly scheduled programs.
Since June 1 2007, CBC has added over 5700 clips to Maven for on demand video viewing, and we have served over 6 million on demand streams via Maven players in addition to millions of live streams.
In Vancouver with the Vancouver Lives Here service we delivered for the first time a fully integrated (radio, television and on-line) product offer including extensive user generated content.
Did we mention that since May 2007 audiences have downloaded over 19 million CBC podcasts including the Hour alone, which has had over 2 million podcasts downloaded. Currently, in iTunes Top Podcast listings for Canada, CBC has 6 of the top 20 podcasts, and 23 of the top 100. The closest podcast from a Canadian broadcaster is the Global National video podcast at #23.I n the same period, CBC Radio 3 has had over 4.4 million podcasts downloaded.
There are currently over 1,000 music concerts available on demand between cbc.ca/radio2 and radio3.cbc.ca and over 15,000 independent Canadian musicians have uploaded over 65,000 songs and videos as on-demand content at radio3.cbc.ca. In fact CBC Radio 3’s unique web radio station based on user-generated music content
has been nominated for a Webby for the last two years for Best Online Radio
Last and not least revenues from CBC.ca rose year over year 18%.
You get the picture - CBC not taking the lead in digital programming - I think not. How would you like to edit the letter down to size and set the record straight? You did the CBC and a great team a disservice.
yours Steve Billinger
