A tribute to Damiano Pietropaolo
The Toronto Star has a kind op/ed piece about Damiano Pietropaolo, who retired recently as head of arts and entertainment at CBC Radio:
[Damiano] turned in his security pass and picked up his pension the other day. We are poorer in radio in Canada without him.
I am acquainted with Pietropaolo. He has sat at my table. He is an artist with a deep sense of the country who joined the CBC to serve the public interest.
He has served us well, and has won a double handful of the major radio prizes, including the coveted Prix Italia.
In the busy alt.radio.networks.cbc Usenet newsgroup, frequent contributor “Bobcat” adds:
What [the column's author] doesn’t say is that this trait of Damiano’s led him to emphatic dissent at what he perceived as the dumbing down of CBC Radio’s artistic standards. The result was that upper managment of the time demoted him from department head to producer, his former position.
Damiano is what the CBC needs these days, but it’s too late now.

I *heard* some time ago that Damiano voluntarily took the job as producer because he missed it. Whatever. I worked for him, albeit not directly, for a time many years ago, and I can say that every positive thing I have ever heard said about him is true. He is a man of elegance, grace and integrity, and as trite as it sounds, I know CBC will be a poorer place without him. He’s missed already.
And….. given his Italian background he would be needed more than ever. Why, you may ask? Come on, look at the greatest Italian artists!!!!
