CBC Television has decided to cancel the midday Gill Deacon show, InsideCBC.com has learned. Apparently, ratings were not large enough to sustain the program.
“The program didn’t really seem to attract an audience,” CBC spokesperson Jeaf Keay told InsideCBC.com. “Gill’s wonderful and she’ll be working on a number of projects wth us for a while. I guess it’s one of those things were sometimes shows work and some don’t.”
Deacon’s last show will be the end of May; the first week of June, the program will enter a “Best Of” cycle, then the program will air re-runs through the summer.
Keay says it’s too early to tell what kind of program might replace the Deacon show, but said it was likely to be a lifestyle-oriented “factual entertainment” program. “We have to go back to the drawing board and see,” he said.

This is great news.THis was one awful show.
I only watch Coronation Street and HNIC. Don’t even know who Gill Deacon is/was.
Good riddance, too bad they have to keep paying her a salary. What a waste of the taxes we working people have to pay.
The entire CBC should be “cancelled”, mainly because it has failed in it’s mandate to unify Canada, unless it’s a Liberal Canada.
Surprise Surprise Surprise - the elite liberal leftist snobs at the CBC do it again. Produce garbage that nobody watches. How much do these corrupt people cost us anyway?
Most of the staff are thrilled the show is cancelled. They’ve been totally screwed by management and abandoned by their so-called union, the Canadian Media Guild, especially when it came to the issue of self assigned employees. Hail the new CBC: disposable contract employees with few enforceable rights.
Well Mike I only watch CBC when they show the leafs. I stopped watching other CBC programming when they became so left leaning that it was embarrassing to watch.
I only watched parts of Gill’s show twice, she is very sweet, natural and pretty, but perhaps there’s enough of the same or similiar type shows, we need something different.
I feel bad for Gill Deacon. I was never able to watch her show - owing to the fact that I work during the day – but I always enjoyed the odd monents that I was able to see. She’s a fun, informed, and nice woman. Hopefully she’ll get something soon. Maybe a return to @DiscoveryCanada? (Ooops…it’s not called that now, is it. Shame on me.)
Completely agree with Mike about Coronation Street. The one program that’s worth watching on CBC is jerked around the schedule in the hope we will tune in to some asinine comedy show when no NHL games are scheduled. In terms of HNIC, private networks could easily pick that up at less cost to taxpayers.Oh yes..Gill Deacon…good decision…make a few more like that!!!
I watched the show a couple times a week at the 2 o’clock slot - depending on the subject. I enjoyed it (especially the environment and health stuff - not so much the mommy stuff), but I think the competition must have been fierce at the 11 o’clock slot. I preferred more elements of the first incarnation than the second. I disliked the new song for the opening immensly. I had to mute it.
Hello, sad to hear about it… I went to a taping on April 13…Sure i found that there wasn`t enough interaction with the public… The day before I attended The Hour, wow!!! George stayed around to talk with us..However, Miss Deacon didn`t come to see us… but, her assistant, (Lindsay?) was really nice… Overall my experience was fun… Good Luck Miss Deacon! Hey BTW, Tom Green would be interested in working for CBC…he wrote it on his myspace… just a hint!
I love Gill Deacon. I was very disappointed when she left the Discovery Channel. None of her successors on Discovery have come even close to matching Gill’s wit and enthusiasm. So I was delighted to see her show up at the CBC. Unfortunately, this show was really lame, and it wasn’t Gill Deacon’s fault. The format looked like something CBC Marketing had thrown together based on what their research had told them women want to watch. There was little room for the spontaneity, humour or risk taking that I would have expected from Deacon. Now it sounds like they’re going to replace her show with the exact same program, just with a different host and a different name. Idiots. I wish Gill well. Hopefully they’ll give her something a little more interesting to work with next time.
Glad to see that the all of the right-wingers were able to get their two-bits in on this matter.
I thought that the show, while not really exciting, was refreshingly tasteful and low-key - not really “elitist” at all. But those afternoon time slots are tough to fill; people who watch afternoon TV tend to watch familiar programs (many of the “soaps” have been running since the 1970s).
I personally agree with the 2006 Senate report; the CBC needs to re-think their mission. Getting rid of pro sports, and enhancing coverage of amateur sports, would be a great start. Pro sports coverage is handled much better by the specialty networks (because that’s what they do).
I’m very sad that you are cancelling a great show like “The Gill Deacon Show”. It seems like every time a GOOD program comes on CBC some “executive” figures out a way to chop it down. In my opinion these decisions should be put to a vote of THE CANADIAN PEOPLE since WE are paying for this network anyway.
What’s next? Coronation Street????? Not all Canadians are interested in “Hockey Night in Canada”
I think the show is geat and Gill is a fantastic person. I watched it all the time. I am really disappointed about it ending.
This is sad. The Gill Deacon Show has been a bright light in a season of mediocre U.S. daytime talk shows and a void in Canada filled only by CITY-TV’s Cityline. Instead of cloning Cityline for the CBC, Gill’s show offered in-depth discussions of topic important to women, featured Canadian guests, and has been sheer delight.
I think poor ratings might be the foolish decision of the CBC to lead into Gill’s show with reruns of “What’s for Dinner,” some of which date back more than a decade.
Also, where was the promotion for The Gill Deacon Show? I discovered it by accident, as I saw no promos on CBC TV, no ads in TV Times, and no feature articles about Gill in any magazines or newspapers.
This show deserved better promotion and a chance to find it’s audience. I will miss it!
okay now folks, this is terrible news.
who else is going to tell us all about bikini waxing, macaroni crafts, and learning how to empower yourself in a one hour episode? only gill.
hey, does anyone know if the props from this show are for sale? or will the set be re-used for some sort of cbc attempt at a comedy featuring a group of toronto 20 somethings trying to navigate their way through life? i really liked the red chairs that she had…that and the other romper room type very bold props….oooh and the cash for cranium props…they were great. poor gill deacon.
