Ghomeshi and the Ceeb, Heroes of 2009
Torontoist, a popular Toronto blog, named both Jian Ghomeshi and the CBC as two of its heroes from 2009. Ghomeshi got the nod for his interview with Billy Bob Thornton, during which he “never lost his cool, maintaining a level of skillful professionalism while doling out enough rope for Thornton to hang himself.”
The CBC was on the list because, despite the cutbacks “this year has probably been the CBC’s most impressive year of television production in decades. Little Mosque On The Prairie, Being Erica, Heartland, and The Border have all had banner years (and ratings deserving of their critical success), while Battle of the Blades was so successful that other countries are copying it for their networks (the first Canadian reality show in television history to earn such an accolade).”
Former CBC host Jesse Brown was also recognized for enduring through while his show, Search Engine, got canceled twice before finally landing at TVO.

Yeah, when I think hero, I think of Jian. I guess no one in media has anything better to do. Shame.
Jian Ghomeshi, hero .. for sitting in his chair quietly, dreaming of the international publicity he’d get as Billy Bob handed it to him on a silver platter. I don’t understand why he deserves credit and kudos for his guest having a meltdown, which, looking back, was as insignifcant as any Q episode.
The actual interview was as awful as his others .. uninspiring questions, not listening to his guests, and posturing for his own popularity.
Can you tell I don’t like the guy?..
No fan of Jian but I he handed the interview like a pro and was the only classy thing about the interview with BBT.
I guess interviewing a US actor turned musician, who didn’t want to talk about acting but about his band and music, now earns accolades from the TO content creation community.
What questions! What style! What coolness under pressure!! Not everyone is comfortable asking the tough questions of pop culture celebs… but luckily Canada and the CBC has Jian.
I think George Strombo is a true hero, by CBC standards. He waves his pen a lot and leans really far forward in his chair when he interviews people. Fx8K journalists covering soldiers and doctors and people like that – George leans really far forward in his chair!!!
