Here today, Gothe tomorrow
Fans of the CBC Radio show Disc Drive won’t be waiting long to hear long-time host Jurgen Gothe. Gothe will host a a new weekly show, tentatively titled Farrago on CBC Radio 2.
Last night, Gothe hosted a DiscDrive concert at the Vancouver Playhouse. (Have photos? Email them to insidecbcblog@gmail.com )
Jurgen is currently Food & Wine Editor of Vancouver Lifestyles Magazine, and contributes regular columns to the journal: “Carte Blanche” and the popular “Travels with my Appetite.” He has been approached by a major Canadian publisher to create a new book based on his “Travels” column.
CBC announced a few months ago that Gothe’s 23-year old Vancouver-based show on CBC Radio 2 would “leave the schedule.”

Does that mean Brave New Waves will be back too? Because I don’t remember a bigger stink over a Radio Two cancellation.
Bring back Brent! He’s not that busy from what I can see; he deserves more than lame TV specials. Ditto Patti Schmidt, who seems really underexposed. Even Augusta LaPaix is still around somewhere.
Anything would be better than playing filler music overnight. Whose bright idea was that?
I will miss Jurgen.
The mix of music is just wonderful along with his wit.
The afternoon mix will just not be the same.
Thank you Jurgen on behalf of Canada for giving us a truly distinct program for over 25 years!!
Gothe looks like he needs a holiday.
Mr. Gothe:
Count me among the legion of Gothe listeners that now have yet-another excuse to leave FM2, and migrate to either satelite or iPod. Congrats on a great run, and best wishes for your future endeavours.
CBC “management” must rank among the world’s most inept: alienate the core listnership (better-educated, more affluent) in a failed attempt to become “hip and edgy”, and not attract the new target audience.
Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
Sad, sad, sad. CBCII is now worse than a nonentity; it has become a source of bad sound (can’t even call it music). The worst is that horrible programme that starts at 10PM. Why would anyone want to listen to noise on their radio? Good-bye CBC. I hope your managment is happy at having ruined what was by far the world’s finest music station.
Will miss you, too, Jurgen.

Mr. Gothe:
The Barberians , Have succeded in dumbing down there listeners, And trying to force feed us there cool-aid. Of nonsence. However ,As true Classic Gothes, We shall never surrender , But continue our fight for a viable program, From (3to6pm) Vas Iz Das Hip-hop.
Jurgen — I’ve listened to DiscDrive “forever”, and could always count on you to stimulate, soothe, entertain or just connect me with the music and the world in general. There will definitely be a void in my afternoons from now on…
It was wonderful while it lasted — thanks for being a pal, and good luck with your Sunday program: I’ll be catching it! (Although perhaps not much else — oops, I’m getting bitter again…)
Jurgen Gothe has played a huge role in my development as a music lover. DiscDrive has always played a tremendous variety of music, and let’s face it, Jurgen has one of the best radio voices in existence.
CBC would have done well, in seeking to broaden the playlist of Radio 2, to keep this host in a larger role.
One hour is a pretty poor consolation prize. Perhaps two?
Or, better yet, put him to work on the classical web-radio stream. Put him on for eight hours a day or something, recycling some DiscDrive material, as well as having new stuff as he has time (he’s a busy guy). It would be absolutely incredible!
If Jurgen would like a break from hosting, that would be his decision to do more wine tasting or writing or traveling and all of which he does well by the way and still shares it with us. When Jurgen stopped giving frequent funny warm cat stories some years ago on Disc Drive I missed them and my wife and I still remember them and recount them when we interact with cats in our lives and laugh. I have listened to Jurgen for almost all of the years he has hosted Disc Drive and enjoyed the eclectic mix that is his trademark as well as the many many versions of the theme music he produced for the program and although it is the same piece of music it is miraculously transformed in each setting to be as if it were a new piece of music and yet a warm reminder of just who you are listening to, and maybe more pertinent to this topic, just where you are listening to it.
Tom Allen is another extremely personable spokesman and although his years are fewer in his present seat than Jurgen maybe he too may want to try other things in the arts and maybe play a bit more hockey with the Vultures or teach trombone or write more and he would be welcomed to do that if he so desired yet I cannot tell you how many mornings I have come in to work and garnered an amazing amount of information relating to not just Classical music and composers but current events and issues and history and stories that I inevitably try and remember to tell the people that I know are not able to listen at that time or are in fact still sleeping at that time. Tom took over from equally adequate hosts some many years ago and he has added to that legacy and become incredibly appreciated by many. When discussing something I have heard from Tom to someone I am often caught saying “my friend Tom told me …” rather than I heard it on CBC Radio 2 this morning. Tom gives effortless dialog and endless comments and explanations on any and every aspect of pieces played or on pieces related to those being played and I have benefited greatly from his comments.
The CBC group of friends includes those like Catherine Belyea, Eric Friesen, Laurie Brown, Katie Malloch, Peter Togni and of course Stuart McLean to name only a few really but what I’m getting at perhaps is more than the music itself … it’s the presentation of what is played and the passion with which it is presented and they all become the face of the CBC that we have come to know and love over many years of good and bad programming decisions. Please keep in mind that although there is a corporate body called the CBC with many long controllling tentacles, we love what we see and if you mess too much with these friends of ours we get annoyed.
