Access Groupwise Messenger from the outside world

As someone who only works inside the Vancouver plant a couple of days a week (most of my work is outside the building), I was thrilled to discover that you can reach people through our in-house Groupwise Messenger system — even when you’re not in a CBC building.

To do so, you’ll need either Groupwise Messenger installed on your PC.

If you’re on a Mac, you can connect to our instant messenger network from the outside world as well — just download Adium (it’s free), go the Adium/Preferences, and enter your Novell username, usually your last name and first initial (e.g., maffint).

You’ll need to know the server name and port — email me (Tod Maffin) from your Groupwise account and I’ll give you the deets.

And feel free to add me to your Groupwise Messenger contact list. :-)

Groupwise has a messenger client? Is this only version 7?

    Gabriel says:

    And for non-Mac-users, there’s Pidgin!

    Julian says:

Pidgin (formerly Gaim) also works well with Groupwise Messenger.

    Guinevere says:

Found instructions on the wiki this morning on it.

[Link removed from public site. Please check the CBC wiki internally for the URL to download the Groupwise Messenger.]

Thanks for posting about this! Nobody in our little group knew about it.

    Jennifer says:

hey Tod - can people outside CBC Vancouver have messenger??

    J in Regina

    Tod Maffin says:

    Jennifer: Anyone can use it.

    Jennifer says:

Hey TM - thanks! I had no idea about it…

Here in Regina, we just installed Dalet Plus and our new computers don’t allow downloads (I miss google toolbar!) so I’m not sure if it’ll work, but I shall persue it.

    Cheers - Jen.

I use iNews stickies A LOT – even though I work in Current Affairs and barely use iNews otherwise.
So this might come in handy, too.

I’m hoping Tod can investigate the privacy of this messenger.
How long does the server keep messages? Do they instantly combust, so to speak?
I know I shouldn’t ever type anything I don’t want people to see, but that’s not the real world I live in.

I’m a bit more paranoid than usual these days after follwing the scandal involving the Detroit mayor — in short, investigators were able to find archives of text messages he sent and recieved more than 4 years ago!!

    Tod Maffin says:

Hi Anon - I just checked and CURRENTLY no records or record are kept of any Groupwise Messenger chats. However, a senior IT manager at CBC tells me that there are plans to archive any chats through Groupwise Messenger in the near future. Google Chat, anyone?
