Happy Birthday CBUT
On December 16, 1953—54 years ago today—Vancouver’s first locally-based television station, CBC-owned and operated CBUT channel 2, was launched when CBC chairman Davidson Dunton pushed a button at the station, a converted garage at the southwest corner of West Georgia and Bute Streets. CBUT began with network programming initially tape-delayed from Toronto.
Thanks to Tod Maffin for the heads up.

How about congratulations for CBC North? This week we’re celebrating 50 years on the air, starting as the Northern Service. Radio/TV communications are extremely important in the far north so this is an important milestone in Canada/CBC history.
Indeed!
How about it, people?
Ummmm…doesn’t time move more slowly up there?
(sorry) Seriously. Congratulations for 50 years of perhaps the most essential service we provide nationally.
Given that you broadcast in mor languages than any other, have to cope with mainining equipment in very adverse conditions, deal with the duress of living north of the “Moral circle”, and actually provide a service that saves lives and offers an international critical service, I am astounded that this is the only venue where I have heard this. I never even heard a peep abut their 50th
Marita, Artic Dreamer and the other lockout bloggers gave me some insiight to a whole area that I had never heard of between 1999-2005.
All of the other regions are a bit spoiled and self-centred to have ignored this. Instead of next summer’s version of “Maria” or “Jeapordy” How about we get CBC North to send us down South a feed or two?
Hubert?….You listening?
