Heritage Minister Confirms Annual Funding
Heritage Minister James Moore confirmed today that the CBC would be receiving the $60 million in annual funding that it has received each year since 2001.
“Yeah, the CBC will be receiving their full allocation, including the $60 million for programming,” Moore said in response to a question from Suhana Meharchand this afternoon. The status of the funding has been up in the air since the federal budget was tabled in January.
The minister also suggested that the government is willing to work in collaboration with CBC/Radio-Canada when it comes to the sale of up to $125 million in assets to help offset next year’s budget shortfall. The sale of assets requires Cabinet approval.

Does this mean less lay offs?
Or will the CBC still use this as a chance to reduce staff?
What a roller coaster week.
[...] is some good news today: Maffin reports Ottawa will continue its expected funding of CBC this year, including the annual supplement of $60 [...]
From what I’m told the annual $60 million funding was anticipated. It will not effect the shortfall.
Of course the Conservatives would like the CBC to sell assets to meet current budget shortfalls, it’s an excellent way to further hollow it out while demonstrating its “financial discipline”. And who needs a national media, entertainment and cultural organization, when the Conservative Party PR office and their members of Parliament can do the same thing at less cost?
So ‘insert real name’ – you actually believe that a government that is providing $1.1 BILLION in funding to the CBC is actively trying to hollow out our public broadcaster?? Take your partisan blinders off.
If I wanted Kory Teneycke in Peter Mansbridge’s job, I’d have said so. And voted so.
Insert Real Name: Personally, I don’t think the problems the CBC is facing are entirely due to politics. It’s a top-heavy, badly managed company, there’s a toxic, snivelling, cowardly, cover-your-ass/blame-the-employees/kiss-your-boss’s-ass culture, and it’s not functioning as a true public broadcaster, especially when we’re talking about TV or online.
