CBC and NHL ink deal to keep Hockey Night on air

The Globe and Mail is reporting that the CBC and the National Hockey League will announce a new television agreement today that will keep Hockey Night In Canada on the air well past the 2007-08 season.

The Globe says the new rights are worth about $100-million a year, an increase from the $65-million that the CBC is now paying the NHL.

The Star says it cost $85 million per year. Either way, CBC is paying a lot more and getting less than the previous deal, right?

How much revenue does HNIC bring in?

I am conflicted by the CBC’s decision (ability?) to sign a deal with the NHL.

On the one hand, I’m happy to hear that the CBC will continue to reap the benefits of the huge ad revenues.

But on the other hand, a small part of me would have liked to have seen what losing hockey would have led to at the CBC. Would there have been a larger demand for new programming? More scripted dramas? A new way of doing business?

    I guess we’ll never know.
