Is CBC Next?
In the last couple days both CTV and Global have announced layoffs. The question on many people’s mind is wether the CBC will follow suit.
Last week Canwest Global announced it is cutting five per cent of its workforce. Which works out to 210 broadcast and 350 publishing jobs. Today CTV announced a hiring freeze and some layoffs.
Both blame the global economic downturn, sagging ad sales, and a recent CRTC rejection of extra fees for the three main networks.
With CBC currently facing a budget shortfall many employees are wondering if a hiring freeze, layoffs or some belt-tightening is on its way at the Mother Corp.
Currently senior executives seem to leaning in favour of maintaining current staff levels but reducing some costs. I’d expect an announcement on that in the coming days. Stay tuned.

If they’re laying off people at the CBC, Gregory Charles should be the first to go.
CBC is my life. I listen to cbc radio all day. (radio one in the morning and two and three in the afternoon) Cbc is also the only television channel that I receive. It’s a sad thought to think that anything could happen to my dear cbc.
Hey Lux,
Where do you live? 1969?
What confuses me is the fact that the average age of the CBC radio listener is supposed to be a female 55+ yrs old. I can hardly keep the station on these days. The music is loud raucous, and where did the classical selections go to. To Moses Znaimers radio station, I guess.
and tell me What is the Point of The Point. it is full of drivel and useless conversation. and every Sunday I turn off Jonathon Goldstein. That is a really timewaster.
I rememember sitting in my car crying the day that Peter Gzowski died, and I dont see that happening any time soon, when the new broadcasters leave at the end of their careers or life. my three children listened to CBC and even with the new formats and new music, they do not listen to CBC – please bring back some thoughtful newscasting. thank god for As It Happens. keep it going for another 40 years.
I was talking with several music-loving friends the other night, and they were saying how they never listen to CBC 2 anymore.
Heck, a lot of the good CBC 2 hosts have either been laid off or have been relegated to shorter or lesser-quality shows.
I no longer listen to CBC radio 2. My husband and I listened to it for years from early morning to late at night.
The new radio 2 is absolutely terrible!!!!!!
Conservatives will use the current economic situation to slash the CBC’s budget
or sell off the CBC entirely.
CBC management will use opportunity this to try and push out long term employees bring in more expensive (automation) schemes to reduce the work force while increasing management.
Some departments will suffer cuts while in others the money will flow like water.
Ideas for generating revenue at the Toronto Broadcast Centre.

Kate: Lux lives in the here and now with the rest of us.
As for the broadcast centres…use’em as production houses. Or rent the space to filmmakers in return for first rights on their content. If you have to rent it out at all…
