Annual Leave: Use it or lose it… well, get paid out for it

Earlier this week, Net Pub Eng (the CBC email address that sends out all-staff announcements within the English service) sent out an email saying a change had been made to the H.R. policy. It provided an intranet link to the new policy, but didn’t spell out what the changes were.

I asked CBC’s human resources department for some clarification about what had actually changed.

Here are the key changes:

  1. Payment of unused leave may now be made unilaterally for Management, Confidential and APS employees.
  2. Payment of unused leave will be calculated at the rate the leave was earned.
  3. Reinforce Management accountability to ensure leave is scheduled and taken.
  4. Preserve Management’s ability to authorize leave based on operational requirements.
  5. Contract employees must take their leave before the conclusion of their term, or have the balance paid out if a new contract or extension is issued.

Annual leave guidelines for unionized employees remain as per the applicable collective agreement.

Does this affect you? How do you feel about it?

    Allan says:

What is more intriguing than this post is the line “You will be be identified by posting.”
    Care to explain?

Such a policy is nothing new.
It simply puts on record that the call is management’s, to decide whether to pay out or save the money and get you out of the building for a couple of weeks.

Tod replies: Oops, thanks for catching that typo. Of course, it should say “You will NOT be identified by posting.”

    Michael says:

Tod-It also looks like the formula for # of annual leave days has also changed. There’s a yearly progression after 10 (argh) years where your leave increases incrementally every year or 2. If I’m reading it right we are getting a bit more leave sooner than before.

    Mike says:

I could be wrong; but I thought unilateral payment of annual leave was against the law.

    Kev says:

At what point will APS agree to the hunting of its members for their luxurious pelts?

    Allan says:

Darn. It served my purposes much better when it was “you WILL be identified”.

Mike, you are wrong, the CBC is not doing anything illegal, and it’s odd that you would think they were.
But thanks for calling, and isn’t it great to be in the Kootenays?

    Mike says:

Allan, you’re wrong. You’ve been identified. You should be hearing the black helicopters any time now.

If by “in the Kootenays” you mean f’ed up on mushrooms then yeah…awesome dude.

I thought it was a labour code thing about the vacation; but maybe I’m wrong. A long time ago with a different broadcaster (Baton); it was a big deal; requiring all sorts of signatures etc. It was painted as being illegal to pay out annual leave UNLESS there was written consent by the employee.

Had to be that way because Baton was known to be quite generous.
