Martha Stewart to get slot on CBC Television
American lifestyle host Martha Stewart will get a daily slot on CBC TV’s schedule starting later this month.
“It will be a great lead-in to our 12 o’clock news, CBC News Today,” said CBC TV’s programming executive Kirstine Layfield in a statement. “Her thoughtful, topical take on modern living is very appealing to Canadian viewers, and a great fit with our daytime strategy.”
The announcement stressed CBC TV’s commitment to Canadian programming. “As the national public television broadcaster, our schedule is, and will remain, overwhelmingly Canadian,” said Layfield. “At the same time, we are pleased to have been able to make room for other kinds of programming that fits our strategy and sensibility, and that will attract and engage our daytime audiences.
Other new programming featured:
- The CBC will also air an “all new Canadian production” with design and style team Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman. It will be featured as a highlight of daytime programming starting in January.
- CBC will also add new shows Kids’ Canada and Bo on the Go. Layfield says with these new additions, the CBC’s children’s programming line-up includes more Canadian content than ever.
CBC will announce more programming in November as it firms up its schedule for early 2008.

You’ve got to be kidding!!!
I wonder if we’re going to have to register:
marthastewart.cbc.ca
msteward.cbc.ca
marthastoowart.cbc.ca
marthastewurt.cbc.ca
etc…
a la Gill Deacon?
Surely a sign of the coming of the apocalypse

One paragraph you say CBC stresses on Cdn content, in another paragraph you are airing Martha Stewart, a 100% American program…..You cannot be more contradicting!!
CBC airing Martha Stewart, how embarrassing!!
I would presume that Martha Stewart’s slot would be her syndicate fare, “The Martha Stewart Show”.
To be honest with you, Gill Deacon was a good personality but it however Canadian it was, The Gill Deason Show just didn’t click. At least with Martha Stewart, there’s a bit of name recognition and et cetera.
If it’s not for our audience, then it’s perfect for the border audiences in the US, I guess!
That’s actually the same paragraph, and it doesn’t actually contradict itself. The CBC is the last Canadian channel that should be embarrassed about the amount of US content that it airs.
For shame. I inadvertently came across this announcement, so don’t know the date, but shame on the CBC! I can remember when the CBC was worth watching, and was worthy of being our national, i.e. Canadian, TV channel. Indeed, many years ago it was the only channel I got, and still was enough TV -both entertaining and informative. Now I rarely have it on; it has become so insipid, homogenized, and just plain dull. Even the news has become mostly useless, being primarily flash and dash, with little content. The patronizing dumbing down of what should be the Canadian national TV channel is shameful and sad.
This must be an Air Farce Joke….because its not funny.
You’d be hard pressed to find anything Canadian tonight – what with an british soap opera and an american documentary. layfield, stursbeg and fuchs – not having embarrassedthe CBC enough last year with the ABC simulcast (setting back CBC standards of programming by at least a generation) have now embarked on the great dumbing-down project> This is refered to by Ms. Layfield as an ‘environment ‘, programming that will have viewers stay through out the night. Really ! – but who watches TV all night long?
the cbc under layfield, stursbeg and fuchs have abandoned qualkity programming. Gone from the schedule is any arts programming, concerts and live (even to tape) performances.
last night Radio Canada aired a delightful concert – opening night at the OSM – a documentary lead into the concert and the concert, complete with kent nagano as a holographic conductor.
the cbc needs to be different and canadian – not some sad clone of american broadcaster. if we want that we can always watch Global and CTV.
Martha Stewart on CBC…..
Well lets see, the 4 signs of the apocalypse
1) Lloyd Robertson goes bald
2)Global stars airing CANADIAN Shows
3)Colin Mocherie gets another show
4) Martha Stewart invades the CBC…
Yep, its the begining of the end you got that right !
c’est domage
Good lord, is CBC so utterly incapable of finding a daytime talkshow host that we’ve come to THIS?!?
CBC TV sells out….again.
I hope the show CBC airs is her older program “Living” and not her newer talk/variety program. She is better at the how-to format. Watching her make chit chat with folks is awkward and uncomfortable and resulted in me not watching her program.
But is the quality of the children’s programming going up or
down?
Bring back the CBC film vaults of 1940s and 1950s films for “Afternoon Matinee” That was better content and certainly an alternative to adjacent channels.
It is the children’s programming that is more important than the low ratings of The Martha. There is so much more innovative copiers on elsewhere.
But then what is the audience for afternoon television? Can anyone improve on Deacon’s ratings other than Stroumbouopolis in the afternoon craft and decoration market?
The Martha Stewart CBC-TV Talkshow?… a total waste of Canadian Taxpayers money- [I never thought I'd ever say that]- and a complete mockery of Program Taste. The Pied Pipers of 250 Front Street West derides again. Who is responsible for this travesty? Maybe CBC should get out of television altogether if this is what they are capable of.
I think it’s pathetic that they didn’t give Gill another year at least. Canadian programming for the most part has to be nurtured if it’s going to get ratings- the instant-smashes like the Hour and Little Mosque are the exception and not the rule.
But moreover, ratings have become far too important. Yes we need to sell ads. But how bad were the ratings? Were we *losing* money on the time slot? Is the rule now that we *have* to be making money on the mandate programs? And if so, how much? I keep hearing about how increased revenues and cost savings are being plowed into programming . . . can anyone show me where? Did it all go into the Tudors, which is an international co-pro anyway?
Typically enough, the whole thing smells bad.
Maybe if Gill Deacon moved to the United States …
Ms. Layfield overlooked pointing out that the commercials for Martha’s show will be entirely Canadian.
I have been watching “Intelligence” on CBC on Friday nights (actually I PVR it and watch it on Saturday morning) and it is an awesome show worthy of its name. If someone asked me what I think of CBC TV these days I would have to say it is doing good things if it has a cool drama like that on the air. Although I do not understand why they are licensing Martha Stewart, if it means that the dollars saved will get us more great all Canadian TV drama like “Intelligence” then maybe the current brass isn’t completely out of it. But I could be wrong. In any case folks, try watching “Intelligence” and if you like it let them know so they don’t license CSI Miami on us!
One point worth mentioning is that a show like that is probably going to get half-decent numbers and is being placed to improve the CBC’s presence in daytime TV and build audiences for the all-Canadian shows immediately after it. It does suck that Gill Deacon didn’t take off, but if it had been kept around for another year despite being a lame duck the same people that are now holding a wake in the comments for it would be booing it off the screen. This kind of thing almost makes me sympathetic for management – almost.
Also, the Hour wasn’t an instant smash, and built up over the year despite a shaky start. Little Mosque was, partly because of quality, but also because of massive international interest and decent marketing.
It is sad to see that the last stronghold of Canadian Television giving way to shows that are hosted by less than Canadian entertainers and content. It is sad that the last stronghold of our culture is more concerned with ratings that what our people have to say about our country and our lifestyles. Please, preserve this.
Thank you
teprine
I am stunned, just stunned that this show is going to be featured on the CBC.
I thought at first when I heard this in the office this was a joke… seriously. How can we justify public funding when we put this on our programming??? How can we say we are any different than CTV?
–Alan
Martha Stewart is hardly original programming – I thought she was ‘old hat’

What a terrible idea. I’d really rather not have tax money supporting such lame american programming.
So On the Road Again won gemini’s galore, and featured incredible canadian stories, and was cancelled because it “wasn’t local enough and didn’t fit with CBC’s commitment to local regional programing.” However, an american ex con, talking about how to bake chest nuts from Vermont totally blends in with our public broadcaster’s mantra. I say drop martha, and put Jerry Springer on…. Go big or stay home people.
I can’t believe how many of you are freaking out over one more American show being added to the schedule. Are you all friends and family of Gill Deacon or something?
What I find curious about all of these “the sky is falling!” comments is how these same critics are not also protesting the daily reruns of The Simpsons, Frasier, or Arrested Development in CBC’s afternoon schedule. How is Martha any different from these shows?
At least Martha’s show is current (unlike 15+year old Simpsons reruns) and informative. I agree with Tundrachik above in that I would much prefer they air her old “Living” show but I’ll take this new version over the Gill show any day.
Well airing Ms. Stewart’s talkfest is probably cheaper than funding another round of Gil Deacon, but why doesn’t the CBC air an extra hour of news at the 11 AM slot – NBC just added another hour of “Today” why not do that if they want to emulate the US webs? I thought the idea was to purge the US shows from the schedule instead they are creeping back, Frasier and Arrested Development reruns and now Martha, you are backsliding CBC!
There’s got to be a Canadian out there…somewhere…that can do a more interesting show. ps love your country!
Dear Florida sympathizer
The CBC has already answered your question.
I am so depressed that the CB Corporation is acting like a corporation and not like the embodiment of Canadianism we had all irrationally hoped it would be. I used to tune to this Canadian station to escape from American programming. I guess there is no where to hide anymore. These American programs aren’t a slip, they are purchased and scheduled as calculated, ratings and advertising sales driven opportunities. It’s time to question what the Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission defines as the rationale for licensing this station.
Wow! CBC will start airing a show that will actually bring in new viewers?
Viewers that aren’t stodgy, old intellects? Young, fun viewers?
I am impressed.
After searching to find out what happened to Gill Deacon, I discovered her show had been cancelled. Very disapointing but twice as disapointing was the fact that she was replaced by Martha Stewart. I used to watch Gill regularly and would check out her website often to pick up on any information I my have missed. I found her show extremely informative and enjoyed her down-to-earth personality. I tried to watch Martha Stewart but turned it off half way through. Gill Deacon was, for a change, good Canadian programming.
I also was disappointed to find out that the Gill Deacon show was cancelled. I surprised myself by enjoying the show, its content and interesting features, as well as Gill’s great charisma. I began over the year to seek out the show and look forward to watcing it.
I’ve actually lost respect for CBC due to the add on of Martha in place of Gill. I actually think each represents their country and values well. Martha comes across as a fake, plastic barbie doll who multitasks within an inch of her life upholding the laws of perfectionism and materialism so rampant in the States. I don’t think she is a good and real role model for woman of any age. Gill, on the other hand, was a warm and real person whose show addressed serious social issues in a practical and intersting way inspiring realistic change in the average person and upholding the values of social consciousness and interrelatedness.
I think CBC gave up on a good thing that was worthwhile broadcasting in terms of entertainment and contributing to society. CBC should put its effort into supporting Canadian TV personalities to grow and become better if there’s ‘problems’ rather than abandoing them and picking up the easy, ‘mindless’ prgramming that seems to sell so well.
I was very dismayed and disgusted to find that Gill Deacon is being replaced by a show hosted by a convicted felon.
It seems that CBC is being infected by the American corporation disease. It’s no longer about quality, but ratings and money.
And here I thought CBC stood for the CANADIAN Broadcasting Corporation.
It’s only a matter a time before we start seeing American news broadcasts in the mainstream.
Disgusting.
Really sorry to see the Gill Deacon show cancelled. I run a business from my home and I would occassionally tune in to watch her show and catch what i have missed from the website. Pity its cancelled, it kept me sane and give me a good break when i needed one.
What is Ms Deacon doing now? If you’re reading this – I think you’re an amazing woman and I will miss your show.
