PETER ARMSTRONG AND MARK KELLEY TAKE NEW HOST ASSIGNMENTS
CBC News, continuing its new programming direction, today announced that this fall Peter Armstrong will be the new host of WORLD REPORT on CBC Radio One, and Mark Kelley will host a new prime-time show on CBC Newsworld.
Peter Armstrong is returning to Canada from his most recent posting in Jerusalem, as the foreign correspondent for CBC News. While stationed in the Middle East, Armstrong was embedded with Canadian troops on the front lines in Afghanistan. He reported on last month’s elections in Lebanon and also shed light on multiple angles of the Israeli-Palestinian story, including Israel’s military offensive in Gaza last December and January, and a memorable behind-the-scenes look at Palestinian militants in Gaza making Qassam rockets to fire into Israel.
“Each morning, more than one million Canadians begin their day with CBC Radio’s World Report, CBC’s launch pad for the day’s news platforms on radio, television and online,” said Jane Anido, director of news programming, CBC Radio. “Building on the success of the show, Peter takes the helm as the new host, bringing his national and worldly experience to listeners.”
Armstrong has also worked in CBC locations across Canada, beginning in Quebec City with stops in Saint John, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver. His coverage of news stories in Canada and the United States includes the SARS outbreak in Ontario, the election of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives in 2006 and the space shuttle Columbia disaster.
Mark Kelley, correspondent for CBC NEWS: THE NATIONAL, will host a news talk show, from 7 to 9 p.m. ET, on CBC Newsworld.
“Mark’s passion for covering breaking events, along with his extensive reporting experience on national and international stories, will bring viewers a fresh perspective on the day’s stories,” said Cynthia Kinch, director, CBC Newsworld. “Mark’s ability to engage easily with the audience makes him a natural fit for a news talk show.”
Kelley was honoured in 2008 with a Gemini Award for Best News Magazine Segment for his story about the immigration and integration of Muslims in Europe. He has also won two Gemini Awards for Best Host or Interviewer in a news information program—one for his work covering the Sept. 11 attacks on the morning show, and one for his reportage on Disclosure.
