A lot of people have been asking how they can play our live streams inside of iTunes. One of my colleagues came across a website that describes just how to do that.
I’m going to go into more detail on how to implement this.
Step One: Flip4Mac
Microsoft has officially stopped developing software to play Windows Media files on a Mac. Telestream has created a new plugin called “Flip4Mac” that will allow you to play Windows Media streams inside Quicktime.
Download and install the Flip4Mac plugin.
Step Two: Change Preferences
Open the Flip4mac WMV System Preferences pane, select the Movie tab, and make sure that “Create streaming movies” box is checked.
Step Three: Save as a Quicktime file
Visit our live streaming page and select a station you want to be able to play in iTunes. Play it normally in the pop up window.
Click on the little “down arrow” on the right hand side of the control bar and select “Save as Quicktime Movie”.

Step Four: Play in iTunes
Drag the Quicktime file you just created into iTunes. You can now play the stream inside of iTunes!
This only works on Macs and does not work on the Windows version of iTunes.
We did some testing here and this seems to work like a charm. Let me know if it works for you or not by leaving a comment.

it seems to be saving whatever was loaded into the browser cache… when i drag it to itunes it will only play that back, it doesn’t stream.
I had the same problem at first. Make sure your Flip4Mac preferences are set to “Create Streaming Movies”, then quit and re-open safari (or any other browser). It then worked for me, the stream in itunes shows a incredibly long length, negative (-596:30:35).
A downside: you won’t be able to stream it through Airport (unless you use Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba).
Thanks! It used to be that you could copy the address of the stream, and then just use ‘open stream’ in iTunes and paste the link to the stream and that would work. But that stopped maybe with the last version of iTunes or maybe with updates here… But now I can listen again through iTunes at home!
I’ve updated the instructions to include the portion about changing the settings to “Create streaming Movies”
Live feed streams fine for me without having the “create streaming moves” option checked. I suppose it’s “cooler” to have it stream through iTunes, but for a quick and easy method, just let it stream thru F4M,s WMV plug in. Listening right now to Vancouver about how more work is less productive, and that we all should take more time off. The worst at this is the US….I’m in California and it’s true…you’re expected to grind it out with only 2 weeks vacation per year…that’s NOT good. BTW, Flip4Mac is quite perfect for a Mac.
I tried this and it seems to work in Safari, but not in Firefox (my default browser). Firefox wants me to download a plug in, but won’t tell me which one is missing! What’s a girl to do?
I had some trouble opening the Flip4Mac preferences to set reference to “create streaming movies”. I was finally able to do it by double-clicking on the alias WMV upgrade, which I found in the Flip4Mac folder installed by the dmg file. Now it works in both Safari and Foxfire.
Thanks for the great tip! It’s made listening to the CBC’s stream much more convenient and consistent.
