PMO files complaint against CBC
The Toronto Star is reporting:
Officials with the Prime Minister’s Office have lodged a complaint with the CBC ombudsman over a report broadcast on the public broadcaster’s French-language network.
The complaint, signed by communications director Sandra Buckler, was not made public Tuesday but rejects certain aspects of the report which it contends do not reflect reality.
It takes issue with Radio-Canada reports about a meeting between U.S. and Canadian officials in Texas which suggested the existence of a project to quadruple oilsands extraction from here to 2011 to meet U.S. needs.
The Conservatives have rejected contentions the meeting was secret and said they had not been sworn in as the government. They said the meeting was planned in 2005 by the previous Liberal government of Paul Martin.

Update: The french arm of CBC Television is refusing to retract the report; the Radio-Canada (radio) already has. There is no question of running any correction at all of any kind,” said Pierre Tourangau, a senior director with Radio-Canada Television. “We feel we did our job quite correctly.”

That’s strange because, I saw the report in question and it plainly states that the meeting had been planed and taken by the previous liberal government. It in no way tried to hide this fact. Perhaps the conservatives need to take more French classes. There was as far as I know on this argument, full disclosure.
It treated the secret report as some conspiracy Dave. The only disclosure they made was that “dee Hrpuur guvrmeent” was secretly changing enviromental policy… sans proof.
French lessons?
CBC/Rad-Can needs to get some journalism lessons.
What’s the big news. The CBC news team is (as usual) anti-Conservative. They won’t change. I really don’t care, as everyone’s onto them. I only hate the fact that I have to pay with my hard earned tax dollars.
The ombudsman must be very busy posting form letters denying any bias. The whole thing is a crock. A $1 billion per year crock.
Mike, you’re showing your colours. How much does the PMO pay you? What would you be doing on insidecbc.com if you weren’t either an employee of, or a devotee, of CBC? Just spying on the “liberal conspiring” media?
As far as the report is concerned, I didn’t see it. I have, however, seen other reports where the Harper government has tacitly agreed to triple the oil sands production to meet the American addiction. Our oil is not considered “foreign”.
Whether or not it should be considered “foreign” for US purposes might be worth a national debate, on CBC and the private networks alike. No?
I think so, but we may be tied to the Free Trade agreement, whereby Canada is to supply oil to the United States on an emergency priority basis at the going rate. Either way, the environment takes another beating, and the Harper government will say they are powerless to stop it, benefits the economy, etc, etc.
