Wait. Isn’t Q that annoying alien from Star Trek who was always being a jerk to Picard?
Does this mean Jian gets to use a lot of cool gadgets like a pen that explodes, or a watch that shoots darts, or a car that drives byitself?
O
They should call it “Failing Upwards” as that’s what Jian seems to be doing within the CBC.
Y

the Mighty Q — I like it, I like it
I like it, I like it
Q for quest?
Q?
You are joking right?
Must be that iQ was already taken for an Apple product … or was simply not involved.
Guess the real question is: will listeners queue up?
Q for suQs?
Is it because Jian Ghosmeshi’s got the Questions for guests to Answer?
Is it because it’s the only letter of the alphabet that doesn’t appear in Jian Ghosmeshi’s name?
Is it because it’s the middle letter of the alphabet and they’re middle of the road?
Does it happen to be the newest letter in the alphabet and they’re the newest kid on the block (not to be confused with the band of the same name, later known only as NKOTB)?
The shape of the letter is pretty sexy — especially the version in the McLean’s Handwriting examples that we had on the walls in school (but I’m over 40, so…), and Jian’s got a sexy shape to him, I guess; but is that the reason?
What’s wrong with the other ideas we had based on the Air Farce name? Or “these couple of hours have a bunch of artistic minutes” or something? “Really Eclectic Circus”? “Jian Page Challenge”?
Anything’s better than “Q”, surely? There’s gotta be a reason they went with that…
Right?
Oh. I would have loved to be at the meeting where that one was decided.

Well, Zed was already taken. We’ll soon run out of late-alphabet letters!
looks like zoom icon!
let the watercooler banter (confusion) begin! Overheard this morning in a newsroom:
“Hey…they named Jian’s show”
“Oh yeah? tell me what it is!”
“The Q”
“The C-U-E?”
“No… Q”
“The Queue? like a line-up??? Cool! I get it”
“No…actually it’s Q…like the letter”
“Q. The letter Q. You’re kidding me right?”
“No…not kidding… ain’t it ‘Q’ute?”
ahhhhh…. Q.
Just how long did it take for them to come up with that one? Maybe i’m just bitter that they didn’t pick my suggestion.
I’m intriqued by the choice and would love to know what made Q “The One”.
It’s a real pity that CBC radio programmers “over-think” show names. Consider “Tonic”. When I mentioned it to a colleague, he asked: You mean as in hair tonic?.
Q says nothing and indicates a disregard for the obvious. If your show is about a particular subject, don’t be shy about its name. It’s like naming your children, you have to be a little careful, but not sublime or clever.
How about Arts National? It was one of the best Arts programs produced on CBC Stereo in the 1980s. It sounds big and broad, just like this country. That was the perfect name for an Arts Magazine program. Short, succinct and easy to remember.
In Toronto, if you’re talking about radio and say ‘Q’ people understand you to mean Q107 Rock Radio (after all, they’ve been calling themselves ‘the Q’ for about 30 years now).
I’m guessing there’s probably ‘Q’s in half a dozen other places too.
This just seems poorly thought out. Unless one assumes that CBC listeners have no idea that there is any other radio out there. Which would also seem poorly thought out.
Too bad somebody beat me to the obvious response:
Y?
As long as they call it “Q with Jian Ghomeshi” we’ll know never to listen to it.
Some meanings for Q (courtesy Wikipedia):

-In Taiwan Mandarin or Taiwanese language, Q means “flexible.” especially for food (the Roman letter is used).

-Q is the leading character in the famous Chinese novel The True Story of Ah Q by Lu Xun. Because of this novel, “Ah Q” in China means someone who always claims spiritual victory despite frequent defeat.
I hope Canadian Tire gets mad.
Q is the name of Canadian Tire’s somewhat new Gas Station + Sobeys + Starbucks concept.
This country might be too small for two Qs.
here is the explanation for the Q-name:

it was originally PR, but that sounded too much like a prQ
honestly guys, you’re just too sexy for your shorts.
Huh! someone already stole my “cue” play on words.
it’s a letter of the alphabet that I happen to like. it’s allowed many people to find my surname easily in university registration lineups and voter lists, and as far as I can tell, it will for many years to come.
it’s an intriguing choice. At least it’s not cheesy like “Jian’s Afternoon Arts Roundup” or something like that.
maybe it’s an audio geek in-joke, eg. Q is the value of the width of the frequencies that are being modified when you EQ something.
Jian better talk about Q now and then. I’m talking about the real Q that I first met in the book 24 Charing Cross Road oh so many years ago.
[...] favourite Iranian Canadian broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi is hosting the new CBC radio afternoon arts show. A couple of notable things about the show is that it’ll replace Freestyle, a show that I think [...]
Do CBC people read these nasty comments about themselves and lose confidence?
CBC continues its fetishism of all things British.
Anyone other than me making jokes about the title of this show involving either of DC Comics characters known as the Question is in trouble.
