Small online campaign wants CBC Radio 3 on television

CBC Radio 3’s new and popular video podcast is attracting a solid number of fans — some of which want CBC to pick up the podcast and put it on CBC Television.

Toronto’s Justin Beach, a blogger and CBC freelancer, has posted his call online:

It is time to take the next logical step - Radio 3 TV: With Canadian music videos, music news, tour and festival info, new releases, interviews and the occasional in studio performance. Because, as Canadians, the CBC belongs to you, because it is something we want to see and because CBC Television hasn’t had a music show (much less a Canadian music show) in a long time…

What do you think? Would you watch a CBC Radio 3 program on television?

There was an much-loved (also occasionally-maligned) show on RTE (the Irish public broadcaster), called No Disco, that had a really positive effect on independent music in Ireland. So long as they could keep themselves to a simple format and not turn into Zed2.0, and managed to have good countrywide representation (which Radio 3 pretty much does), I can only see it being a good thing here too.

It did good numbers too. Unfortunately the best description of it that I can find online is a link to the petition to stop it being cancelled:

    But them’s the breaks.

A fifth music channel on TV?
    Why not.
And why leave it there. The opera and symphony orchestras are also in need of greater exposure . So why not seven or ten channels?
But the most striking thing is that when you go to Justin’s page there’s no petition, no plan, nothing.
    Need I type more?
Is it your mission, Tod, to plug every idea that comes along if it relates to the CBC?
‘Cause I’ve got a million of them too.

    Justin says:

    Hey Tod,

Thanks for the plug! Allan, sorry you couldn’t find the petition - it’s here if you go to the main page at http://r3tv.publicbroadcasting.ca/. As for a plan, this is the plan - to get the idea out there, get as many people as possible interested in the idea, build up some enthusiasm for it and, should they decide to go for it, leave the rest up to the people who get paid to do it - between the folks at CBC Radio, the folk in program planning at CBC television and the folks at Radio 3 itself I think they’ll have plenty of planners.

    Cheers (and thanks again Tod)!
    Justin

There are far worse ideas to pursue. And none of the music channels on TV I know of are of much interest to me right now.

Back around the early ’90s wasn’t there a TV show on CBC that was for either indie/new Canadian music? I was very little back then, but I could swear seeing ads for the show alongside watching Kids in the Hall.. I don’t remember much, I think the host had long hair (maybe curlyish) and a metal jacket, not sure.. but I remember Barenaked Ladies were listed on the ad once around the time they were starting to become big

Excellent idea. CBC Radio 3 is truly the CBC done right, and I really think a video face to that service would be awesome.

In year’s past I’ve thought Brave New Waves should have a late-night video compendium on CBC Television, but I’d now be just as happy to see a CBC Radio 3 showcasing the latest and best Canadian indie, electro and hip hop-type artists. Much Music DOESN’T play this stuff so who better to support Canadian talent than CBC Radio 3!

BTW, even if people aren’t up late to watch it, I’m sure it would also be popular in the PVR world too! CBC if you like this idea, please hire me (or Justin).
