In a note issued today, CBC Radio executive director Jennifer McGuire announced that the late spring BBM radio ratings numbers were out, and “the numbers are good” for CBC Radio One and Two:
Nationally, Radio One and Radio 2 together reached 1.8 million Canadians in the eight markets surveyed. The two networks combined reached 12.8% of Canadians surveyed, and captured a share of 11.9, up slightly from the 11.2% delivered the previous period (S2 2006).
The biggest gains were in Edmonton (13.6 share, up from 7.2 last summer), Ottawa (Radio One overall up to 18.8 from 14.6 last spring, with a 25.2 share for Ottawa Morning) and Calgary (Calgary Eyeopener up to 13.6, from 7.2) while Vancouver, Montreal and Winnipeg also showed gains. But in Toronto the numbers dipped overall to 5.4, down from 6.0.

Just to clarify, you should also point out in the above statement that the market share figures given for Ottawa are for CBC Radio One. It is true that CBC Radio One has an 18.8% market share in the Ottawa region compared to a 14.6% market share in the same period last year. However, the market share for CBC Radio Two has fallen to 4.6% from 5.2% during the same period last year. Those readers interested in checking the market share data for radio stations in their city can find this data on the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement web site. Look under the ‘Top-line Data’ link.

Right you are, James - the Ottawa figure is for Radio One. The results for Radio Two were summed up as “better than expected”, holding at around 5 per cent overall, with an increase in Vancouver since last year (to 6.5 from 5.9, but as Allycat points out, a drop from last quarter’s peak of 7.4.)
The full top-line data can be found on this .pdf.
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your response. What I would like to see (and I believe there are many CBC Radio Two listeners who would also like to see this) is a comparison of Radio Two’s market share for the 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM time slot during the S1 2007 survey and the same time slot for the S2 2007 survey. I believe this data should be available from BBM in the S1 2007 and S2 2007 surveys but is not available to members of the general public. This comparison would show any gain or decline in market share resulting from the cancellation of “Music for Awhile” and its replacement with “Tonic”.
Also, I’d like to see a comparison of Radio Two’s market share for the 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM time slot for the S1 2007 and S2 2007 surveys - this would show the gain or decline in market share resulting from the cancellation of “In Performance” and its replacement with “Canada Live”.
If you can find this information and present it on this web site, I’m sure that there would be many CBC Radio Two listeners who are interested in seeing this. Of course, I also realize you may not have access to this information or, if you do, you may not be permitted to disclose this information.
Hi James, I took your suggestion and asked Communications about this data, but was told “CBC does not provide research data to the public - it’s a tool we use internally for programming and development.” So I guess you are stuck with what BBM chooses to make public.
