CBC Radio One to launch program about political spin

CBC Radio One launches a new series January 21 looking at spin — so pervasive it has come to dominate our political, commercial and cultural discourse. Ira Basen looks at the nexus between the media and public relations in Spin Cycles, a series about spin, the spinners and the spun. It runs during the third hour of The Sunday Edition.
Four other series have been extended: Afghanada, the fictional radio drama that probes the war in Afghanistan through the eyes of Canadian soldiers; The Debaters, a debate between Canadian comedians; and The Age of Persuasion which explores how advertising and marketing permeate every aspect of 21st century life; Writer Russell Smith continues his unconventional and provocative look at how language is faring and failing under the strains of contemporary living on And Sometimes Y.

And Sometimes Y is one of my favourite radio shows. The writing is engaging and smart, and the show succeeds at making language a fascinating subject. So glad it’s coming back!

I have to say it. ‘The Debaters’ is halarious! It’s a fresh and fun way to look at certain issues.

Love “The Debaters.” It’s a great way of tapping into the Jon Stewart-ish topical humour without ripping off the “fake news” format.

“The Art of Persuasion” I enjoy, but it often feels like a 10- or 15-minute piece that’s been padded with music and zany FX into 30 minutes.

And I’m looking forward to Basen’s “Spin” show - he’s extremely insightful on this stuff, as seen in his columns for cbc.ca.

    Dwight Williams says:

Been keeping an ear to “Afghanada” whenever I can. Is there a chance of getting the collected series to date on disc?

    Phil says:

Now that Radio One has a programme on political spin, we should get a programme on media spin.

I’m really surprised at how vivid our media is, but it would be entertaining to look at a Canadian “Media Watch” (an Australian Broadcasting Corporation programme) that talks about perceptions in the newspapers and other media. Scrutiny and all.

Remember the Canwest problem involving their editors that changed the words on some of their stories on the newswire? I certainly do. And there should be someone out there to be a cheque and balance (I know I know, it’s spelt check in this context, but it shows we’re not Canadian enough).
