Hi Bob,

I don't think humans can tune in, for one the signal is inaudible, and second it's not voice it's data. Nevertheless there are ways to get an electrical 'weather report' for instance I recently signed up for the Toronto Hydro smart meter program which shows the usage in my house by day, and explains how much electricity I'm using at peak or off peak periods, and when those period are.

Additionally some provinces provide the provincial demand picture online, for instance this is Ontario's current electrical usage, you can see the peak and off-peak periods there.

Can we humans tune in? I'm very interested in seeing what sort of information is being sent about the electrical grid. If I can get the electrical weather report, I could, f'rinstance, do my laundry at off-peak times even without a sentient washing machine.

Yes, ratings will be 350% as CBC's The Currant Bun goes through the roof with all the fridges ("Is your fridge running?" ha-ha), toasters, coffee pots and hair dryers listening to AnnA MariA TremontI in the morning for secret instructions.
Those poor benighted soules who listen to private radio have to crawl out of the Matrix to turn on their coffee maker, toaster etc.

Julian, that's exactly it. the dishwasher will have a built in receiver, so not only will it be able to listen for data on the electric grid, but it can also tune in to the current everyday. just joking, it won't listen to the current.

Interesting idea, but wouldn't your radio need to be turned on 24x7 in order for this to work?

On the other hand, maybe dishwashers could come with built-in FM receivers... now THAT would be amusing.
