Truth In Advertising
Yesterday, the Globe published an article by Guy Dixon about staff changes at CBC News arising from the news renewal process.
The article was mostly correct, but this one line stuck out:
Newsworld, which is one of the CBC’s few areas which attract advertising revenue, will be up for a licence renewal before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission next year.
What a strange thing to write. For the record CBC pulled in $329 million in advertising revenue in 2008, and I suspect most of that wasn’t attracted to Newsworld, that is unless that Lakota guy is forking over bags of cash.

It’s the Grey Power lady who has the deep pockets. She’s late for a board meeting. “C’mon, already! Let’s GO!”
some day I should write a blog post about my favourite ads on Newsworld. That’s one of them.
And by “favourite” you mean, “the ones that cut through the newsroom background hum like an angle grinder through a Kryptonite lock”?
yeah. or the ones you hear so often you become trained like a pavlovian dog. “I don’t drive like her…”
You must all be newbies, there was a drugstore ad featuring a bad opera singer that was pretty legendary around 2000.
Funny, yesterday I wondered if I went to a Halowe’en party dressed like the Grey Power driver, would anybody get it?
Now I know. Anybody know where I can find an ugly faux pearl brooch?
V. funny. Made a comment elsewhere asking the Canadian networks to bring back the Lacota ad if they needed $$$ instead of the endless running of “Ignatieff : He’s just visiting” ads. Should have lobbied for the Grey Power driver, too. I’m trained like a Pavlovian dog on that one, as well.
At least Billy Mays hasn’t made an appearance yet.
My favorite Newsworld ad was a promo by the network itself in which they said “Marijuana use is no longer a crime. What will this mean?” I think they got in trouble for the unclear messaging because it doesn’t say if or when it “is no longer a crime”. Anyways check it out for yourself at the youtube address below.
