Get quick-access to CBC stuff in your browser

I’ve put together a special-edition “Inside the CBC” browser toolbar to give you quick access to CBC resources. The toolbar looks like this:

You can search right within the toolbar, check the latest headlines from Inside the CBC without going to the page, and even access direct areas of the CBC web site, including popular shows and podcasts.

On the right-side of the toolbar, you can listen to CBC Radio One and even chat with other listeners.

Install the Inside the CBC Toolbar (IE, Firefox)

Note: This is not an official thingy by the Corp; just something I made on my own, so if it breaks your computer, neither the Corp nor I can offer anything other than condolences.

I have a question: why is it that CBC.ca sections like “Words at Large” (W@L) have absolutely no navigation links to them? Seriously, go to CBC.ca and see if you can find ANYTHING that links to that section. People will never find it by browsing — they’ll only find W@L if they already know about it, and if they remember the URL (cbc.ca/wordsatlarge).

Arguably, that’s not a hard URL to remember, but that’s not the point. I’m a big fan of books and reading, so I visit W@L fairly often, but it always annoys me that I can’t just get there from a link on CBC.ca. So how about it?

    Love it! Thanks Todd!

I can’t help but say though that this is exactly the type of thing the corp should be offering “OFFICIALLY” though. I guess it’ll take a few months of meetings for that to happen though. ;)

    Jason Paris says:

…as well. It would be nice to have all CBC Radio offerings available via the toolbar, instead of just Radio 1. For instance, Radio 2, Radio-Canada services, RCI, Radio 3, etc. Maybe even personalizing the service to your own region as well. I know, I’m getting greedy here.

love the quick access. Very handy to have it there. I wish there was an option for Radio 2 on West Coast time. But the quick access is very neat.

    Tod Maffin says:

Jason - If you refresh the toolbar (click the logo and select Upgrade), you should now have CBC Radio 2 and a west-coast feed to choose from in the radio.

    Tod Maffin says:

Ruth: That second R2 stream is coming. I think they’re planning to roll it out when the new Radio 2 launches in a few weeks.

    Scott says:

Little things…some of which may be fixable, at least one of which I think we’re stuck with… (and all of which may be, depending on the tools used…)

    1) radio player width: wish it was a little wider when open. Here it’s not too bad because CBC R1: Ottawa fits, but I notice that the original default of CBC R1: Vancou… doesn’t fit in the display. I’m running a widescreen display, so it feels strange to have truncated text yet I have about 3″ of empty space on the right-hand end of the toolbar. Don’t know if it’s possible to do this in a way that doesn’t break non-widescreen displays, though.

    2) weather display defaulted to degrees F but was easily changed. Don’t know whether it’s possible to change the install default.

    3) seems strange that the extended forecast link goes to some random search site instead of a site appropriate to the site, but I realise that this one isn’t likely to be “fixable” unless this were to become an “official thingy” with a budget.

Thanks much for this. I was able to get in and add the other CBC feeds I like and other international stations from the UK, Australia and NZ too. I like the temp icon - can you add an extended forecast?
