Unions win symbolic victory in CBC pension battle
CBC’s unions have won a symbolic victory in a dispute about a surplus in the CBC pension plan. But that doesn’t mean the surplus is destined for employees’ and retirees’ pay cheques yet.
In 2001, of the $336 million available for distribution, the pension board of trustees sent $134 million to employees and retirees. The Canadian Media Guild says that went against an in-house committee recommendation.
While the arbitrator agreed that the Corporation acted against the committee’s recommendation, more hearings will happen to determine what, if any, financial remedy will come from the ruling.
The CMG has told its members in a communique “Don’t go out and buy yourself a Harley just yet.”
