Video of the Revamped CBC News
I found a promo video of for the revamped CBC News on the CBC’s image gallery.
As you can see the news fonts have changed, as have the on-air graphics. You’ll also notice that there are a few shots in the video with the new look for Newsworld, I mean, CBC NN! Here’s a screengrab (sorry it was cropped in the original):

What do you think of the new look?

The “look” makes no difference at all to me. What I want to see is more and better – less repetition (I want to be able to have the CBC News Network (or whatever it’s being called) on for 2 – 3 hours without seeing repitition. Less sports, less weather, less Kevin O’Leary + more depth, more investigative stories (especially political stories) and less water cooler chat, fewer “human interest stories” – no “Baloon Boy” stories at all (that was a ridiculous waste of the CBC’s air time and resources) and better arts and culture reporting – no fashion or gossip stories, little/no coverage of ‘hollywood’ and more focus on Canadian arts and culture.
CBC News is losing me fast – not because of it’s look, fonts or sets but because of the content. The quality of journalism and the relevance of it’s reporting to the public is in sharp decline.
From that one screenshot, honestly, no, I don’t like it. The current layout, the red theme colour, black bars, white font, dark transparent background was pretty organized. Sure, they took up nearly a quarter of the screen, but everything was so clear and organized.
I hope Newsworld…ahem, News Network (rolls eyes on the name), won’t be like CNN. On CNN, I can barely read the news bar at the bottom (whatever that thing is called), the time or anything else.
What happened to Nancy Wilson??
Very solid, real, and unaffected newscaster.
I agree with John W. about Nancy Wilson. I worked with her and she’s tops when it comes to solid hard news. It looks like she’s now on the weekends. I’m sure they’ll say they wanted to strengthen their weekends, but we know better, weekends are a wasteland where they dump people.
I suspect since they wanted to put King Richard’s better half (Carole MacNeil) on during the day they reached their quote of white women, which is why Nancy was shuffled off while Suhana is still there. Maybe they felt Nancy was too old to connect with the hip youth demographic they’re going after.
No matter how you cut it, she’ll be missed.
Big loss losing Nancy Wilson during the mIdday slot Monday to Friday.
She brought a lot of credibility, talent and grace under pressure to Newsworld.
Nancy’s time slot replacement confounds me. Nowhere near the talent of Wilson
I hope they end the repetitive “live look” canned reports from the field that are are a staple hour after hour after hour after hour.
I got a look at work… during my lunch hour… the pace of the graphics makes it look like a tabloid. I hope this is going to go the way of New Coke. The chit-chat I like… it show’s the program is lively and engaging… but, the graphics… whoa!
If I wanted to watch CNN, I would watch CNN. CBC should focus on news, not on looking as flashy as the next news channel. Couldn’t the resources wasted on this revamp have been used to add substance to its newscasts?
The morning show was unwatchable. I couldn’t focus on what was being said I was so dizzy. I’m hoping the national isn’t half as bad.
Agreed on principle. I want to watch CBC Newsworld, not CNN.
Nor a clone of CNN, for that matter.
Since you have a poltiics portal now, how about a week of no politics, but referrals to the site, and then lead with science and health stories only for a week. Then word of mouth pick up and bring in more viewers.
Ads were a terrible waste of money. And the theme music is not an improvement. What did we pay outside consultants this time. (and now we have FOIA enquiries status)
I like the uniformed look of all the local/regional newscasts, but as for the National…it’s like as if there was no opening or filler at all. Maybe if it would be better if they inserted that new CBC News theme (instead of the 5-note, we now have a new 3-note theme) somewhere within. I mean, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Peter’s voice goes back on from commericals.
Actually, now that I come to think about it. Maybe the pace of The National has gotten a bit too fast. News anchors standing up and trying to deliver the news as fast as they can is normal for local news, but for national news, I think it’s a bit weird. I mean heck, two important men, Peter and General Hillier were both standing up during their interview, how weird was that? National news shouldn’t be too fast so that viewers can digest through the most important of news. When it’s fast up to a point that one package comes right after another package with nothing in between (maybe a camera shot back at the anchor or some graphics card or something), it’s a turn off for news reports, at least for me.
I’m gonna give it another week…I might even consider switching to CTV National for my national news provider if things don’t work out too well.
I find it weird that a lot of attention is being made to whether or not Peter is sitting. Are people really bothered that he’s standing now? I could really care less. Lets all be honest here, it really doesn’t matter and not mention it again.
As for the graphics, yeah they are a bit much. And pretty much a rip off of CNN. The old look fit together nicely and wasn’t in the way as much, but the new strategy is to try to make it so people will read them, which as most people point out, is just annoying.
And Nancy Wilson, yeah she was great. And it is worth pointing out that she’s getting replaced by Stursburg’s wife. But as far as the female quota goes, all the day-time anchors are women. I’m amazed at how men just got slowly phased out of the day-time news. This includes business reporters too. I guess it’s women who watch the day-time news, so it makes sense. I hope they find something for Nancy Wilson to do.
