CBC “whistleblower” changes explained
I spotted this line in the recent internal CBC Board of Directors update:
“The role of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Independent Officer will no longer exist; and, there will no longer be an internal process to deal with complaints of reprisal.”
I thought “Wha?!” Actually, more than a few CBCers asked me to get some clarification on what this means. Here’s what has been explained to me:
“Under CBC/Radio-Canada’s revised policy, the role of the Independent Officer will no longer exist. Instead, if employees whish to make a disclosure to a person outside the Corporation, they have a right to make their disclosure to the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner. We continue to have our own internal disclosure and investigation process under the Senior Officer, Pierre Nollet.”There will no longer be an internal process within CBC/Radio-Canada to deal with complaints of reprisal. All such complaints will now be dealt with, through the Public Service Integrity Commissioner and the process established under the legislation.”
“There are a couple other changes that were necessitated by the legislation. The revised policy will be posted to the Corporate Intranet shortly.
“As always, if you have any questions on disclosure of wrongdoings, please call the Disclosure Information Officer at 1-866-340-9983 Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Eastern time) or via e-mail at internal_disclosure@cbc.ca.
