CBC.ca expands reader participation

You may have noticed a new link on the CBC.ca top navigation bar — Your Voice has soft-launched. It’s sort of an amalgamation of readers’ comments, uploaded photos, and links to CBC blogs.

Once you’ve visited and poked around, let us know what you think.

Can’t seem to find the section that shows links to CBC blogs (presumably from reader blogs). What am I missing?

Other than offering the possibility to submit photos, I’m not sure I’m looking at anything other than a different (albeit interesting) way of presenting CBC articles and reader comments online.

I like the idea of the Your View by region option, as a way of informally guaging the regional pulse, but I have to say I’m utterly frustrated to stumble on articles that are closed to comment (ex: Muhammed in PQ commenting on racism in the province - a broad-brush comment which screams for a retort along the lines of the pot-calling-the-kettle-black, but I hit a brick wall : the article is now closed to comment, leaving Muhammed’s comment as the only voice heard)

I’d be interested to see links going back to reader blogs (who link to CBC.ca) - if that is indeed an available Your Voice feature, please point it out. Thanks

And when will we be able to submit video and audio comments, I wonder?

This was on the of last projects I was working on before leaving the CBC.

The system is eventually going to be launched site wide and utilizes a third party system called Pluck (http://www.pluck.com).

    Hello Michelle,

Thanks for commenting. I’ve asked Jon Dube, whose in charge of that stuff, to respond here to your questions.

As for a list of other blogs linking to CBC news stories, I think this page is what you’re looking for?

    Michelle Sullivan says:

    That looks about right.

Would be nice to see BlogWatch integrated into Your Voice.

    thanks for the link

    M.

    Bill Lee says:

Ah, more work for the Conservative blogerati and the pajamahadrin to fill comments in. Or do they ignore the CBC for rudeness in the Globe and Mail comment features?

The intention is nice, but the results will be ugly, (or sad, depending on your degree of optimism).

I think we’re a little behind in getting photos in. CNN actually commits advertising air-time to promote their iReports and they always get great stuff.

    Hi Michelle,

We launched the Your Voice page to better highlight all of the ways the audience is contributing to CBCNews.ca

We’ve been steadily adding new interactive features over the past two years and we want to make it easier for people to find those features, as well as put more emphasis on them.

So this page is a new way of highlighting those features all in one place. I’m glad you find it interesting and enjoy seeing reader comments from across the country under the Your View by region section.

We will be adding new ways for the audience to contribute to CBCNews.ca in the future — such as enabling people to upload video and audio. We do not have fixed dates for those features, so check back at cbcnews.ca/yourvoice and keep an eye on the CBC News Editors’ Blog, where we will discuss new features as we add them.

As for the BlogWatch feature, there is a link to it under the Most Blogged tab, but you rightly point out that it is a bit hard to find, so we are going to be making that more prominent on the page. You can also navigate directly to it by typing cbc.ca/news/blogwatch in your browser.

Also note that you can also find links to blogs that are linking to CBCNews.ca stories in the BLOGWATCH box in the right column of all of our news stories. We are one of the few sites that do that in the world, and we hope you find that useful and interesting.

Thanks so much for your feedback.
